These last few weeks, in another crucial round of the #AFAFarmBillFaceOff, we put our all into pushing for a fair, sustainable food system. The tragic explosion at South Fork Dairy in Texas reveals the dangers of unproven and risky dairy digester technology, as well as the industry's failure in ensuring this doesn't happen. Methane is explosive and 18,000 cows lost their lives, raising questions about using cows for energy. By all accounts it seems like the owner of this South Fork Dairy farm in Dimmitt may be a new expansion of Evan Barton, who owns several South Fork Dairy Farms and is in the business of transitioning dairy farms into "renewal energy" by retrofitting them with Methane Digesters. We want to be clear, we don't have FIRM 100% knowledge he's the owner, as there could be more than 1 dairy farm named the exact same thing that is embarking on Methane Digesters on massive scale dairy farms at the exact same time, but again, we predict he's the same person. The more people that say they support our asks, the better chances we have as a movement to see changes. The current Farm Bill prioritizes livestock farmers, leaving out plant-based foods and ignoring the devastating consequences this has on animals and the environment. The livestock industry is heavily reliant on government subsidies, which come from our taxes. This creates an unsustainable cycle where these large farms continue to profit while smaller, more sustainable farms are left behind. Not only is this system unfair to animals, but it also contributes to the spread of diseases and climate extremes. We need drastic changes to this Farm Bill that prioritizes future-proofed farming practices, keeps farmers farming, reduces the livestock industry's dependency on our taxes, and fairly includes plant-based farmers. When AFA submits our language --- Senators and House Reps need to hear from voters that they align with what we are asking for. It's a huge part of centralizing our voice. We created an instruction sheet for you to follow. Reminder--- You can't just say or add themes like "end animal exploitation" in the Farm Bill. I know we want that, but it doesn't work. It will get you nowhere. Is it symbolic to say those things, yes. But, again it will get you nowhere on actual change that matters to animals. You have to be very precise about the funding you want to add, expand, make more inclusive or set guardrails. We input some ideas in the instruction sheet. Feel free to customize them, but a good portion of our asks are related to transitions for a mutlitude of crises happening, giving plant based farmers more funding and safety nets for accessibility, focusing on under-represented farmers with these funds/opportunities and reducing the favoritism and monopolized control of the livestock industry. We have many more asks, but those are the main themes. And just a reminder, we can't do this alone. As we continue to scale, we need to ensure we can afford lobbyists to represent us in this critical fight.
