On July 4, 2024, we honor our fourth paternal maternal grandfather. My father’s mother’s line. James Dungee was a free man, patriot, and community builder born around 1760, almost 264 years ago. Grandfather Dungee served in the American Revolutionary War as part of the Virginia State Artillery. For his service, he received bounty land in Virginia. Dungee's legacy, linked to Yoruba genetic ancestry, exemplifies AfricanAmericanvism, highlighting courage, freedom, empowerment, and agency. My sister Okella Paige Trice establishes our genealogical and genetic ancestry in her forthcoming book, The Wonder of Me, A Genealogy Journey.

On this Juneteenth 2024, I’m honoring my 4th maternal grandfather, Shadrach Palmer, who was born 232 years ago in 1792.
My sister Okella Trice said Shadrach purchased his freedom in 1837. He paid Sara Pope $66.66 per month until he paid $300. However, his family remained enslaved. He died in 1856 at age 95, eleven years before the Emancipation Proclamation (1863).
Shadrach continued to save, but given the racial structure, he had a white man, W.H. Gaines, hold his savings.
In his will—yes, Shadrach had a will—he bequeathed $500 to his wife, Lettie. However, Gaines refused to give the money to Lettie.
Then, the Emancipation Proclamation happened (1863) and the Freedman’s Bureau (1865) was established to assist the formerly enslaved.
In August 1867, Lettie went to the Freedman’s Bureau and sued Gaines. In December 1867, the Bureau ruled that Shadrach purchased his freedom in 1837 and that Gaines had to pay Lettie $500 plus interest.
One of my male Palmer cousins took the African Ancestry test, which established that Shadrach shared genetic ancestry with the people in Gabon. Gabon is on the west coast of Central Africa. It borders Equatorial Guinea to the northwest, Cameroon to the north, the Republic of the Congo to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The country has significant rainforests and biodiversity. The capital and largest city of Gabon is Libreville.
Okella shares this and other family stories in her forthcoming book, The Wonder of Me, A Genealogy Journey.

African Ancestry Offers Juneteenth Special To Find One's Roots As Juneteenth nears, the co-founder of African Ancestry, Dr. Gina Paige, describes how their DNA kits help Black people find their roots.
On this Father's Day, I'm honoring my fourth Grandfather, Sam Page, born in 1790. Thanks to my sister', (Okella Paige Trice's), genealogical research, and my daughter's (Gina Paige's) company, African Ancestry, for their genetic ancestry testing, we know that your genetic ancestry traces back to the Hausa living in what was once called Hausaland and that your genetic defendants share genetic ancestry with people currently living in Nigeria. According to the 1790 Census, you were a "freeman." My sister, Okella, follows you using census and other records in her upcoming book, "The Wonder of Me, A Genealogical Journey."

Check out what we explored,

From the Executive Summary: Now in its fourth year, Deloitte Global’s Women @ Work: A Global Outlook report examines some of the critical workplace and societal factors that have a profound impact on women’s careers. Representing the views of 5,000 women from organizations across 10 countries, the report seeks to understand the lived experiences of women at work—and the ways in which aspects of their lives outside work can impact these experiences. Our 2021 and 2022 reports were dominated by the negative impacts of the pandemic and the resulting challenges as we emerged from it. They revealed a world of work where women were grappling with burnout, experiencing exclusion as organizations shifted to hybrid working, and encountering non-inclusive behaviors. In 2023 we saw some signs of improvement in these areas, but high stress levels, heavy domestic loads, a lack of workplace support for mental and physical health challenges, and concerns about flexible working continued—and nearly half of women were still encountering non-inclusive behaviors at work. Perhaps this was why in 2023 more women left their employer than in the two previous years combined. This year’s report continues to explore these issues, while also delving deeper into women’s experiences with their health, safety, rights, and household responsibilities. The findings are thought-provoking. They give insight into the challenges, both in and out of the workplace, faced by the world’s working women today—and how far employers around the world need to progress to help create workplaces where women are able to thrive.
Women @ Work 2023: A Global Outlook Now in its third year, Deloitte's Women @ Work: A Global Outlook offers some glimpses of real improvement. Rates of burnout have dropped. Non-inclusive behaviors have declined. And women are reporting more positive experiences with hybrid work. But despite some improvements over the past year, many....

In our third “Spiritual Jazz and Meditation Jam Session” on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, we explored the journey from an illusion-driven false self to an authentic true one through Doug and Jean Carn’s “Revelation.” Along our journey from false to true self, we used meditation to make friends with these two selves and others and to develop a moment-by-moment recognition of all our “selves.” This recognition allows “rays of light” to shift our perspectives and highlights the importance of embracing our multifaceted identities to foster personal growth and connect deeply with others.
Revelation: Illusion, Authenticity, and Awareness "Real strength lies not in holding onto illusions, but in letting them go to grasp the reality that lies beyond.” - The Meditativist Summary: Doug and Jea
Doug and Jean Carn’s “Revelation,” a Spiritual Jazz piece, encapsulates a journey from “the not real to the real.” The lyrics invite listeners to shed false beliefs, embrace authenticity, and experience transformation. This music inspires self-discovery, leading to a profound understanding and a liberated existence. “Revelation” is the topic of our Spiritual Jazz and Meditation Jam Session on February 21, 2024.
