Gracious and merciful God, we remember the terrible acts against humanity that the world has suffered and especially those in our country on this day twenty-three years ago. We pray for the innocent victims and their families. We pray also that those whose hearts are filled with hate might be turned toward love. Help us not to speak or act rashly, but fill our hearts with passion for those in need and strengthen our wills that we may do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly before you. Amen.

Who would you choose to honor with a kneeler?
Shown are Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) and Ottmar Merganthaler (1854–1899).
Nathaniel Bowditch was an early American mathematician remembered for his work on ocean navigation. He is often credited as the founder of modern maritime navigation; his book "The New American Practical Navigator," first published in 1802, is still carried on board every commissioned U.S. Naval vessel.
Ottmar Mergenthaler invented the linotype machine, the first device that could easily and quickly set complete lines of type for printing presses. Linotype machines revolutionized the printing world, and were the backbone of newspapers until the 1980s. The last U.S. newspaper to use linotype, the Saguache Crescent in Colorado; its last issue was published in March 2023.
