Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is a festival of lights that is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs worldwide. The holiday usually falls in October or November and this year it is on November 12th. It lasts for five days and its name is derived from the words ‘avali’ which means ‘row’ and ‘deepa’ which means ‘clay lamps’. When combined, these words represent ‘a row of lights’. Lights are symbolic of this festival and Indians use sparklers and fireworks to create a festive atmosphere and fuel the inner light that spiritually protects them from the darkness.
