"When I left the U.S. Marine Corps, I knew I would be an educator. I wanted to make a positive impact and change lives. But I was completely lost when it came to a plan on how to do it. I was the first in my family to attend college, and while I had the desire, I didn't know the pathway. WSP showed me that pathway."
--Luis Cornejo, 2017 WSP Texas A&M cohort

x : “As my seventh and final year between high school and college comes to an end, I am feeling incredibly grateful for all the experiences that led me to Princeton. After high school, I spent six years in the Navy as a nuclear electrician on a submarine in Guam and then took a gap year to participate in Princeton’s Bridge Year program. On the U.S. Navy submarine, much of my time was spent underwater, where I worked hard alongside people I consider family. Outside of the water, I was able to ride bullet trains in Japan and climb mountains in Washington. These experiences cultivated my passion for exploration and community. I am proud of my service, and I have always looked forward to new challenges. So I started the long and, for veterans, often difficult task of applying to college. Many applications are tailored to high school students, and navigating around things like recommendation letters from a high school counselor were difficult for me. Luckily, I came across two organizations: Service to School, which paired me with a mentor, Luke Hixson ‘25, who guided me through the application process, and the Warrior-Scholar Project, a rigorous college preparatory program for veterans. These programs empowered me to apply to , when my original plan had been to attend community college. After being accepted to Princeton, I spent nine months in Senegal with the Novogratz Bridge Year Program. I knew it would be a life-changing experience I couldn’t pass up. I lived with a local family, learned French and Wolof, and volunteered with a public health NGO. After Senegal, I participated in Emma Bloomberg Center for Access & Opportunity, Princeton University's Freshman Scholars Institute to help prepare for my time at Princeton. Through FSI, I became part of a community of scholars at the University, and my main takeaway was the importance of dedicating time to fostering relationships. There are so many incredible people at Princeton, and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to get to know them. For my first year, I am most excited to meet new people and continue finding and building my community.” — Clifford McGuigan ‘28; photo by Lance Reaves-Hicks ‘25

Last week, our The University of Chicago STEM cohort had lunch with a special visitor to campus: U.S. Senator Dick Durbin!

Our students learned about the influence that Senator Durbin's mentor, Paul Douglas, who was the oldest recruit in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps, had on his career (even his name!) and how he inspired the senator to fight for what he believes in.

One topic the senator covered that we also feel strongly about: predatory for-profit schools. Senator Durbin shared some statistics with our students to highlight the issue--8% of people graduating from high school attend for-profit colleges and universities, but students attending for-profit colleges and universities make up 30% of all student loan defaults. (We also know that 7 out of the top 10 institutional recipients of GI Bill funding are for-profit colleges and universities, per USA TODAY. Read more: https://bit.ly/3WKbtq0)

Thank you, Senator Durbin, for sharing stories of inspiration from your career with our students!

Are you ready for college? If not, we will get you ready.
