DC, we need your voices!!!!

Last month, approved a sorely needed $22.5M to build a new animal shelter to replace NYA. The proposed location for the new shelter, tho, is a waste of those dollars. It is not Metro accessible, far from almost every neighborhood in DC, and lacks sufficient space for exercise yards. It's also an unideal spot for the animals, with the noise of the industrial neighborhood and the lack of sidewalks.

DC residents deserves a better location, and , Deputy Mayor Turnage, and their agencies (, ) will finalize the new location any day now. They must prioritize DC's future and select a better location than the one originally proposed.

His bio says so much about who Dr Kent Smith was and how many people and animals he helped. To me, he was a close friend and trusted partner and ally in my rescue work. He taught me new medical facts and tactics at each and every visit. He loved teaching and he had a wicked sense of humor. I am utterly heartbroken at his sudden passing Wednesday evening. He had just returned from vacation with his daughter- having just started the business and opened Willow Animal Hospital a couple years ago, like most business owners, he was working tirelessly and had to be encouraged to take breaks and days off. He gave clients his cell phone and just Monday, emailed me about a serious case (Quince) I am treating and reminded me to call or text him anytime. I loved him dearly and relied so much on his expertise, compassion, willingness to take in urgent cases and fight for these souls we are rescuing. He kindly comforted me many many times when we had to make the decision to cease the suffering of so many kitties- whom I loved deeply and bottle raised a few. Together we sent those kitties to heaven painlessly, surrounded by love and peace, and I know those souls and so many more greeted Kent with joy and exuberance when he transitioned peacefully Wednesday night. I will forever remain grateful for every act of kindness he showed me and the animals I entrusted to him for healing. I vow to carry that legacy with me in honor of Kent.

He was a healer in so many ways. The personal loss is absolutely devastating for me and so may others, but the loss to the rescue community whom he served his entire life is truly tragic. There are not many Doctors who practice as he did.

We need more who have the mindset to provide affordable veterinary care and maintain a flexible practice for our urgent cases and need to spay and neuter en masse and at low costs so we can provide more of those services. It’s all about the numbers- fewer animals on the street with kittens born homeless mean fewer we need to save. He knew this and he spent every spare moment spaying and neutering when we needed him. (The wait is months long elsewhere)
I cannot express how much my heart hurts at the loss of Dr Kent Smith- a beautiful soul, a lifelong servant healing countless animals (and people), a dear and trusted friend and a true partner in my personal quest to save as many innocent lives as I can. I find a bit of peace knowing he is with the beloved souls who have transitioned to the other side.

We will carry on your mission, Kent. Thank you. For absolutely everything you’ve done for me and my rescue cases. I love and miss you terribly already.
