End of the road for Damascus as we go down to Clarksburg Super Kings (CSK) by a whopping 104 runs.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, CSK capitalized on some ordinary Damascus bowling to race to 83 for no loss in the first 15 overs. Arjun and Ibrahim then scripted a classic comeback for Damascus, conceding only 60 odd runs in the next 15 overs while picking up 4 wickets. Ryan and Ankur bowled the last 10 and did well to restrict CSK to 211 despite wickets in hand for CSK.
A very gettable target on a flat batting track became increasingly difficult as Damascus lost wickets in heaps. Other than Arjun, Ryan and Ankur no batsman reached double figures or spent enough time at the crease to pose a challenge to CSK. With all said and done, Damascus folded for 107 within 28 overs.
Disappointing result but credit to CSK for outperforming Damascus in all aspects of the game.

The Official rankings are in. Game on!
Woodbridge Hawks beating DC Royals draws Damascus as 8th seed, and sets up a Quarter-Final matchup against the Number 1 seed Clarksburg Super Kings.
Damascus secure playoffs with a 6-wicket win over Gymkhana.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Gymkhana got off to somewhat of a flier courtesy of some ordinary bowling up-front. However, a couple of wickets kept the scoring in check. At 76/2 in 15 overs, Gymkhana was certainly positioned to post a target that would cause some concerns in the Damascus camp. However, the introduction of Ryan immediately after the break paid dividends as he picked 2 wickets in 3 balls and turned the game on its head. Gymkhana could hardly negotiate the turning ball from that point as Ryan and Viral ran through the batting order without giving anything. Gymkhana were bowled out for 109 within 33 overs.
In reply, Damascus lost Khamis early but Arjun and Gundeep steadied the ship and carried the inning to the 15-over break (46/1). Arjun and Gundeep were both dismissed close to each other after the break, and Ankur didn't manage to score many either. However, Ravi was in sublime touch and made short work of they remaining runs to pick up the win and the playoff spot for Damascus. Ryan contributing with a couple of exquisite cover drives.
Damascus vs Southern Cavaliers was abandoned, without a ball bowled, due to a wet outfield.
Damascus better the #1 ranked team in DC Royals to set-up a Win-Or-Go-Home clash with Gymkhana.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Damascus top-order showed reasonable poise and method to cautiously lay a platform for the middle order to explode later. Fueled by a key partnership between Ankur and Ravi, Damascus posted 154/5 at the 30-over mark. Subhadip, Viral and Pratik then launched into the DC Royals attack amassing 86 runs in the last 10 overs to post a formidable 240/9 in the allotted 40 overs.
241 was always going to be a tough ask against the Damascus bowling line-up and DC Royals' hole got a little deeper as they lost their opener on the second ball. While the run-rate lagged behind for most of the inning, DC Royals put up a good fight with a 60-run stand between Nikhil and Pawan, and a 49-run partnership between Nikhil and Nail. But 98 runs off the last 10 overs proved to be far too many as Ankur and Viral made short work of the tail, picking up a 62-run victory.

League: Damascus CC vs DC Royals CC - WMCB - Washington Metropolitan Cricket Board Damascus CC won by 62 Run(s);Damascus CC 245/9(40.0 overs) DC Royals CC 183/10(36.2 overs)
In a rematch of the 2016 WMCB Championship Final, Damascus beat Punjab Lions by 7 wickets.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Punjab Lions never really settled to post a big target. Gundeep, Prabhjot, Ankur and Viral worked their way through the batting order to bowl out Punjab Lions for 117 within 30 overs.
In reply, Damascus lost both openers in the same over with less than 20 on the board but consolidated with a 30-odd run stand between Gundeep and Ravi. With the initial jitters out of the way, Gundeep and Ankur made short work of the remaining runs, picking up a 7-wicket win. Gundeep picking up an unbeaten 50 in the process.
Southern Cavaliers are next on schedule.
Damascus fights for that elusive win and finally gets it, edging Columbia by 6 runs in a rain-reduced 30-over contest.
Columbia won the toss and promptly decided to field first to take advantage of the tacky Laurel wicket expected to cause problems for the first hour or so. Damascus got a horror start losing both the openers in the very first over with nothing on the board. Ravi and Gundeep put together a little partnership that saw off the new ball but didn't add many to the total. Gundeep and Ankur then put a 50+ stand to get Damascus to a stage where 160-170 seemed achievable. But both fell in quick succession and a little middle-order collapse left too much for the tail to do. Damascus was bowled out for 137 with 2 balls to spare. Defendable but tricky given the ground conditions.
Gundeep and Ravipal, opening the bowling, were stingy but Columbia did not lose many wickets ensuring that the game went deep. As the game progressed, runs began to flow but wickets came as well - keeping the balance intact. With 40 runs needed in about 8 overs and 5 wickets in the shed, it could be said that Columbia had the upper hand. However, a wonderful 5 over spell of bowling between Ryan and Viral brought everyone to the edge of their seats with Columbia needing 7 off 7 with 1 wicket in hand. Fortunately for us, the very next ball brought a wicket and Damascus secured a win by the narrowest of margins.
Washout Adds to Damascus Woes as 2 points go sailing away in heavy rain against UCC.
Losing the toss and being asked to field, Damascus bowlers did a reasonable job restricting United to 205 despite a late flourish by Shreyas, who scored a quick 50.
Extended rain through the break caused Mr. Duckworth and Lewis to interfere, and Damascus - after a handful of phonecalls and shouting matches - was told that they will be chasing 169 in 31 overs. Damascus looked well set to overwhelm that target at 116/3 in 16 overs, with Ravi Parthasarthy in sublime form. However, rain returned with a fury and the game was Abandoned. Wonder what 20 minutes could've done in this case.
The record remains 2-3-1 and the journey gets only tougher.
Damascus Go Down to DC Tigers, fall to 2-1.
Winning the toss, and electing to field first Damascus bowlers gave a solid start - picking up an early wicket and restricting the run flow for DC Tigers. With 68/1 at the first break, Junaid Rashid cut lose and scored freely for the Tigers to score a fantastic 100 and push the score up to 158/4 in 30 overs. Damascus did reasonably well in the last 10 to only concede 60 and bowl out Tigers for 218.
In response, Damascus lost both their openers without many on the board and a freak dismissal brought an end to attempt to revive the inning by Subhadip and Ankur. At 70/4 in 15, Damascus had dug themselves a hole but not deep enough to consider the game to be over. Ravipal and Ryan rode on some luck and put together a strong stand together to breathe some life into the Damascus Inning. But the fall of Ravipal's wickets immediately brought Ryan's, and the game slipped away from Damascus quickly thereafter. Damascus was bowled out in the 36th over 53 runs short of the target.
We go into the July 4 break at 2-1 and return with a clash against Woodbridge Hawks on Jul 8.
Damascus beat Nova Knights by 142 runs to improve to 2-0.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Damascus got off to a decent start posting 48/2 in the first 8 overs. Ankur and Gundeep then took charge of the scoring and reached the 15-over break at 101/2 setting up a platform to post a big score. However some good bowling and a mini-collapse saw Damascus only score 50 runs in the next 15 overs while losing 4 wickets. Ravipal and Avinash then put together a solid 79 run stand and courtesy of some fantastic finishing, Damascus ended with 232/7 - picking up 80 odd runs in the last 10 overs.
232 was always going to be a tough ask for Nova but Damascus bowlers being on song basically made the matters worse. Gundeep and Ravipal reduced Nova to 14/3 within 5 overs. Nova fought back with a 61-run stand for the 4th wicket. But once Mitul broke the partnership in the 19th over, things went quickly downhill from there. Ankur and Ryan picked up the last 5 wickets for just 1 run as Nova Knights folded for 89.
Damascus play DC Tigers next at Oxon Hill.
Damascus begin the 40-over campaign with a 29-run win over Zee Sports.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Damascus seemed to get off to a flier but lost 3 early wickets to be in a spot of bother. Gundeep and Ryan put together a wonderful 80-run stand for the 4th wicket to get Damascus to 100 odd in 20 overs. Both were dismissed in quick succession and concerns re-emerged. But the old guard of Avinash and Vishal put up a 50-run stand and steered the ship to a total the bowlers had a chance of defending. 195 for 7 the final score.
Zee Sports got off to a solid start - putting up 42 and not losing a wicket in the first 10. Damascus though pulled things back in the next 10, primarily through Mitul, picking up 4 wickets and reducing Zee Sports to 85/4. At the end of 30 overs, the game was in the balance with Damascus slightly ahead as Zee Sports needed 60 to win off 60 balls with 4 wickets in hand. Damascus certainly held the nerve better, restricted the run flow and picked up the remaining 4 wickets within the 36th over to claim a 29-run win. Pratik picking up a 5-for in the process.
Next Up: Nova Knights at Oxon Hill
The T20 train stops at Quarter Finals as Damascus lose to Columbia by 11 runs. Asked to field first, Damascus bowlers did exceptionally well to restrict a potent Columbia batting to 118. Barring more than the usual amount of wides and some sloppy work in the field, Damascus got a very achievable score to chase.
The Damascus chase was completely uncharacteristic of what the world has come to know of the T20 game. Losing the opening wicket without many on the board, Damascus batsmen decided to crawl into a shell and dragged the inning along at 3 runs an over. A run out and a flurry of wickets in an attempt to breathe some life into the run rate dug the hole even deeper and int the end Damascus played out their allotted overs falling 11 short of target without being bowled out.
On to the 40-0ver journey.
Damascus go down to CSK but scrape through to the playoffs.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Damascus did exactly the opposite of what was required in the first 10 overs - losing 5 wickets and putting up only 60 odd. Some acceleration towards the end by Viral put Damascus in a spot that saw them finish with 148, probably 15-20 more than what they'd had expected at the half-way stage. However, on Mark Twain - the target was about 20 odd away from safety.
The bowlers began well picking up key wickets without giving many and at the half-way stage, Damascus had replicated their own batting woes for CSK. But CSK fought back with a quick 46 from Rajesh that took the game away from Damascus. CSK achieved the target with 5 balls to spare.
A big loss by Khyber Warriors on Saturday and Damascus stretching the game to the end meant Damascus ended up in the 6th spot with a NRR differential of less than 0.1. Damascus will now face Columbia who put the DC Royals winning streak to an end in the Quarter Final on June 3.
2017 T20 Playoff Scenarios π€
ALREADY QUALIFIED: π
* Punjab Lions (Win Percentage: 100) β With a clash against the winless Herndon Bengals remaining, Punjab Lions should wrap up the International Conference and book a ticket to the semi-finals directly.
* Clarksburg Super Kings (Win Percentage: 100) β Playoffs are a guarantee but the #1 Spot in the American Conference is not. They face Damascus who will most likely need to win to get to the playoffs. A Win should get them to the semi-finals directly barring a huge victory by DC Royals.
* DC Royals (Win Percentage: 100) β DC Royals are in the playoffs having stayed undefeated so far. They face a Columbia side who also has to win to make it. A Win and a CSK loss can get them a #1 seed; or a huge win.
IN THE HUNT: π
* Khyber Warriors (Win Percentage: 80) β Khyber Warriors need to keep the winning roll going to guarantee a spot in the Top 6. However, their healthy run rate may be enough to secure a spot despite a loss in case either one of the three teams below falter.
* Columbia (Win Percentage: 80) β A Win guarantees playoffs but it wonβt come easy against a DC Royals side who will be trying to secure the #1 seed in the American Conference. They have the best run rate amongst the teams in the Hunt though. So the likelihood of moving on with a loss is higher than others in case someone here falters.
* Damascus (Win Percentage: 80) β With the worst run rate amongst the teams in the hunt, a win looks like the only probable way of securing a playoff spot. Theyβd have to dethrone CSK as the group leaders, and in case Columbia overcomes DC Royals set up a 4-way tie for the top spot in American Conference. Miracles do happen though.
* DC Tigers (Win Percentage: 75) β No team has been hurt by rain more than DC Tigers. Despite their healthy run rate, they are the only team who do not control their fate. If Khyber Warriors, Columbia and Damascus all win, DC Tigers will be eliminated. They need a win and someone dropping points (via a loss or a washout) to go through.
Common Theme: If the whole weekend is a washout, DC Tigers are eliminated. Otherwise a Washout will hurt unless one of the other 3 teams in the hunt drop points via a loss.
Weekend Report: 1 Washout and 1 Win Sets Up an Interesting Weekend
Saturday, May 13: The game against Columbia was abandoned because of heavy rain over the past 2 days.
Sunday, May 14: The covers and the sun did their job well enough to allow for a 15-over a side game between Damascus and Gymkhana. Damascus won the toss and elected to bat. Pratik and Ryan got Damascus off to a flyer scoring almost 50 in the first 5 overs. Damascus lost their way in the middle courtesy of some quick wickets and some ill-advised running. However, a few l***y blows from Ibrahim lifted the score to 128 in 15 overs.
In response, Gymkhana batsmen were greeted by some rather uncharacteristically friendly bowling by the Damascus seamers. The batsmen took full advantage and jumped to 46 for 1 in merely 4 overs. However, spin bowling proved to be their kryptonite. Viral and Ghanshyam combined to put together a string of overs that didn't go for many and chipped away at the wickets at the same time. Deepak and Ankur then picked up the scraps to limit Gymkhana to 80-odd in the allotted 15 overs and pick up a victory with over 40 runs to spare.
Next on Schedule: Clarksburg Super Kings
Damascus the new cardiac cats for WCMB? Another close one. 1 run win over United to make it 3 in a row. United won the toss and put Damascus to bat on a cold morning with sluggish outfield. Ravi (41) and Ryan (31) put up an 84-run stand for the 3rd wicket and Viral and Ankur finished off with some quick runs to lift Damascus to 155/5. A slightly above-par score on the day.
United innings began with a stutter and they should've lost 1 wicket in the very first over if the umpire had heard the nick that went through to the keeper. However things steadied from there on for them and they kept chipping away at the target. To the credit of Damascus bowlers - they did not let things get out of hand, and brought the equation to 40-odd required off the last 5 overs. Some good hitting and a flagrantly dishonest call by the leg-umpire brought United knocking to the doorsteps of victory - needing 4 off the last 5 balls. Miracles do happen though. The next 5 balls went for 0 0 W W 2,W and United finished 1 short of Damascus' total.
Double header weekend is next with clashes against Columbia and Gymkhana.
Two in a row for Damascus as we better Pakistan Stars. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Damascus got off to a less than ideal start with our top 4 back in the hut for just 20 and less than 4 overs bowled. But it was a tremendous recovery as Ryan and Ankur put together 99 for the 5th wicket. Some sloppy bowling and l***y blows by Sonu and Ankur at the end lifted Damascus to a spirited 161/6.
Defending an above par score, Damascus bowlers never let things out of hand as wickets fell continuously for Pakistan Stars as they fell way too short of the target loosing the game by 70 odd runs. Ravipal Panesar causing the most damage with 3 wickets to his name. A good debut by Ghanshyam Patel as well picking up 2 wickets in 2 overs without conceding many.
Weekend Report: Damascus Finally Get on the Board
Saturday, Apr 22: vs Nova Knights
Rain Gods interfered yet again and the game vs. Nova Knights was Washed Off without a ball bowled. Both teams sharing a point.
Sunday, Apr 21: vs Rebels
The rain moved out of the area in time for us to play a full T20 game. Winning the toss, Damascus elected to bat. Despite losing Khamis cheaply, Ravipal and Pratik (on Debut) took the attack to the opposition and set the tone for the inning. Pratik scoring a blistering 50 in 24 balls. There was a bit of a wobble in the middle but Viral (39) and Ankur (38*) put the scoring back on track and with acceleration towards the end, Damascus posted a formidable 175/8 in the allotted 20 overs. Ravipal and Ankur gave yet another bright start in the bowling department - picking up 2 early wickets and not giving away many runs in the first 5 overs. However, things went quickly downhill from there as bowling became erratic, fielding sloppy and catching an art that eluded Damascus. Rebels looked on course for victory requiring only 39 runs off the final 30 balls - with plenty of wickets in hand. However, Viral, Sonu and Ankur combined to restrict Rebels 5 short of the target as Damascus found their missing catching mits in the last couple of overs to claim the first W of the season.
Next Stop: Pakistan Stars on Sat, Apr 29 (2:00 PM)
Not a bright start to 2017 as Damascus suffer a big loss to DC Royals. Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Damascus begun well restricting DC Royals to 20 odd for 2 in 6 overs. But things quickly went downhill from there as runs began to leak and bowlers erred. DC Royals posted a mammoth 172/3 in the end. It was always going to be a tough ask to chase the total down but Damascus inning never got going as wickets fell cheaply and in quick succession. Damascus were bowled out within 17 overs for 99 - going down by 73 runs. Time to regroup and come back stronger.
Finally... We're done with the Off Season. Time to come out of hibernation. Damascus open their 2017 season against DC Royals at WCC Turf Park, Laurel on Saturday, Apr 15.
Damascus second best as we go down to Punjab Lions by 90 runs in the final. Asked to field first, Damascus started off on the wrong foot, dropping Lions' ace batsman Puneet twice in the first 8 balls of the game. Puneet made Damascus pay with a brisk 70 off 50 balls. Damascus fought back well through Ryan and Viral to reduce Lions to 102 for 6, and it seemed like the Lions' inning would wrap up soon. But strong rearguard action by Yasin and Simmi from Punjab Lions saw the total soar, and Simmi Launched into the Damascus bowlers for a fiery 116 that included 15 sixes. Punjab Lions posted a mammoth 278, which required every bit of batting prowess to be chased down.
Khamis and Deepak Pathak started off the chase positively posting 24 within the first 4 overs but then a flurry of wickets had Damscus struggling at 40 for 4 in the 8th over. Ankur and Viral got together at the crease and started a rebuilding effort to get closer to the target. A 120+ run stand between the two threatened the Punjab Lions total for a bit. However, the fall of Ankur (78) in the 27th over spelled the end of Damascus' resistance as the other 5 wickets fell for a mere 25 runs within the next 5 overs and gave the Lions the WMCB Championship.
Punjab Lions were truly the better, more resilient and determined team on the day and deserved the win. Congratulations to Punjab Lions for a wonderful championship-winning campaign!
Damascus take on Punjab Lions in the WMCB Championship Final tomorrow, Sat Sep 24 2016 at Oxon Hill. The game is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM. Come out to enjoy the teams, and if you can't you can always follow the live action at cricclubs.com/wmcbleague

And then there were two. Damascus through to the final with a 62-run win over United in the semi-final. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Damascus stuttered throughout their inning, showing potential to put a big score on the board only to be wiped away by loss of quick wickets. There were only two notable partnerships through the inning - Ravi and Khamis put 41 for the second wicket, and Ankur and Gundeep put up another 54 for the fifth wicket. Damascus were bowled out for 173 within 35 overs, possibly 30-50 runs shy of what they should have scored on a surface that was tricky to say the least.
The United openers, as always, showed intent to take the attack to the Damascus bowlers but were dismissed early in their pursuit. Early couple of wickets seemed to open the floodgates as United lost 7 wickets before the 15th over for less than 50 runs. Raj Meena played an enterprising inning hitting some big sixes and taking the score across 100 before he ran out of partners - giving Damascus the win.
Damascus will take on Punjab Lions, who beat #1 seed Gladiators in what many people are calling an upset win, in the Final on September 24. Congratulations to both United and Gladiators for making the semi-finals and having yet another great season.

Damascus progress to the Semi-Finals beating Woodbridge Hawks by 69 runs. Put in to bat first at Mark Twain, Damascus overcame an early double-blow to post a massive 295 on the back of a sublime 60 by Ravi and an enterprising 50 by Deepak Sharma. Both batsmen were ably supported by the entire batting order that built partnerships and kept the scoring rate going.
In response, Hawks lost a wicket the very first ball but then rode a bit of luck, regrouped and batted very well to keep the chase on track mainly through 140 odd run partnership between Furqan Salim (102) and Arshad Masroor (70). With about a 100 runs required off the last 12 overs, Hawks lost wickets in a heap - 6 wickets within 8 balls precisely - and eventually succumbed to a 69-run loss in the 35th over. Ankur (5 wkts) and Deepak Sharma (4 wkts, including hattrick) cleaning up the Hawks batting order between them.
The action now moves to Laurel 1, where Damascus will take on United in a rematch of an August game at the same venue where United trumped Damascus by 3 wickets, while chasing 226.

Damascus take on Woodbridge Hawks in the Quarter Final of the WMCB Championship this Saturday, September 10 at Mark Twain. Let the Playoffs Begin!
Damascus beat Southern Cavaliers by 3 wickets in the final regular season game of 2016 to finish the season at 8-2-2. Asked to bowl first, Damascus bowlers maintained a tight grip on proceedings for the most part, restricting Cavaliers to 40/3 in 15 overs. Cavaliers picked up pace in the next 15 to get to 115/4 in 30 overs. But some spirited bowling in the last 10 saw the Cavaliers bowled out for 159 within 38 overs. Damascus got off to a flier chasing what was a sub-par score on a decent Laurel surface - picking up 16 in the first over. Cavaliers, however, got right back in the game with a flurry of wickets but a solid partnership between Deepak Sharma and Midhun Lal brought the game within striking distance. Basha and Deepak then finished the job to give Damascus the 8th win of the season.
A big thank you to Southern Cavaliers CC for a good game and the post-game festivities.
With a Win Percentage of 80, Damascus finish the 2016 regular season as the #2 seed for the playoffs, and will face off against Woodbridge Hawks in the Quarter Final at Mark Twain.
Scorecard: https://cricclubs.com/wmcbleague/viewScorecard.do?matchId=91&clubId=1257
Damascus vs Gymkhana was abandoned due to heavy rain in the Washington Metropolitan area. Gymkhana elected to bat first, and some uncharacteristic loose bowling and fielding by Damascus resulted in a run-fest for the Gymkhana top order. Gymkhana reached 185/2 in 30 overs (Bilal Raja scoring a century) and looked poised for a huge score before Damascus got their act together and picked up the last 8 wickets for 35 runs, dismissing Gymkhana for a very chasable 231.
In reply, Damascus started off strong by scoring 10 in the first over before the rains intervened. A restart was attempted about 20 minutes later, with a revised target of 201 in 37 overs, but rains came back after 11 more balls bowled and caused the game to be abandoned with Damascus at 19/1 in 2.5 overs.
Abandoned game assures Damascus of a Top-4 finish. Damascus will face Southern Cavaliers in a re-match of the 2015 league championship final.

Damascus beat Zee Sports by 124 runs to get back to winning ways and march towards a top-4 finish in the WMCB Championship. Batting first, Damascus amassed 251 with contributions coming all through the batting order. In reply, Zee Sports, with the exception of Bilal Javed, struggled to come to terms with the Damascus bowling and were bowled out for 127 in the 34th over.

League: Damascus CC vs Zee Sports CC - WMCB - Washington Metropolitan Cricket Board Damascus CC won by 124 runs;Damascus CC 251/10(39.3 overs) Zee Sports CC 127/8(30.5 overs)
Damascus fall to United, drop to 6-2-1. Put in to bat first, Damascus got a fast but less than an ideal start with the loss of 4 wickets despite amassing 79 runs in the first 13 overs. Deepak Pathak and Ankur stabilized things in the middle, both picking up 50s to steer Damascus to a respectable total. Some good batting by the lower order helped Damascus post a respectable 226. In reply, United got off to flier - scoring 91 off the first 14 overs for the loss of only 1 wicket. Damascus pulled things back in the next session, picking up 4 wickets for not a lot. However defending 68 off the last 12 was always going to be tough against a good batting team such as United with 1 fielder short. United made Damascus pay, and though Damascus did well to take the game into the 39th over, too many gaps in the field made the runs come easy. United won by 3 wickets.
Another bye week for Damascus before a back-to-back weekend against Zee Sports and Gymkhana. Playoff rankings up for grabs.
