Recently, the Greater Washington Board of Trade brought together business executives and social leaders at Busboys and Poets in Anacostia to help foster collaboration and identify opportunities to support inclusive entrepreneurship and small business growth in our region. While there are numerous programs in the region already in place to support these this initiative, we explored ways to accelerate the impact of these programs, identify areas where additional support is needed, and brainstorm how to enhance their effectiveness

Last week we celebrated 23 years of Washington DC attending ICSC Las Vegas. Conversations at this conference lead to economic and community impact for DC. Wegmans at City Ridge DC, Lidl US at Skyland Town Center, and the Apple flagship store in DowntownDC are just a few examples of the 300+ retailers that have opened in DC due to the city's and Washington DC Economic Partnership's retail attraction efforts. These stores generate more than $100 million annually in estimated sales tax revenue and bring needed services and activations to our neighborhoods.

Redbrick LMD is designing a "National Center for Cyber Learning" to promote workforce development and equip individuals with the necessary skills for thriving in the digital age as part of the project's commercial and office component. The mixed-use project will also feature multiple residential and retail buildings, offering its residents a vibrant and dynamic environment.

"There are almost 100,000 open positions in cybersecurity locally right now," Skinner said, and in a decade, if they can train several thousand people a year through the center, "we'll close the need."-Tom Skinner, a founding member of Redbrick LMD.

Thanks to a generous grant of $3.2 million from Jeff Bezos, Howard University, in collaboration with Morgan State University and Georgetown University's School of Public Policy’s Massive Data Institute, is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative - the Economic Impact Data Collective (EIDC). This partnership between multiple institutions will enable the EIDC to work closely with communities disproportionately affected by environmental injustice.

HalfSmoke recently signed a lease for their latest location at Skyland Town Center! The 3,950-square-foot restaurant will accommodate around 200 guests with indoor seating, including a private dining area and bar seating for 20. The restaurant will also feature a 40-seat outdoor patio area, perfect for enjoying a meal outdoors.

This marks a significant milestone for HalfSmoke as it will be their first brand new, full buildout since their establishment in 2016. Congratulations to HalfSmoke on this exciting new venture!

Children’s National Hospital has appointed Michelle Riley-Brown as its new leader, succeeding Dr. Kurt Newman, the current leader of 12 years, who will be retiring. Under Dr. Newman's leadership, a new research and innovation campus at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center was developed, a $215 million project whose first phase opened in 2021.

Riley-Brown brings a wealth of experience in pediatric healthcare to the role, having served as the former Executive Vice President of Houston Texas Children's Hospital, where she oversaw numerous functions, including strategic planning, acquisitions, quality performance, clinical operations, philanthropy, and marketing. Her extensive knowledge and proven track record make her the perfect candidate to extend Dr. Newman's legacy. DC Housing Finance Agency - DCHFA recently announced that they're financing the construction of a new, 100 percent affordable community in Garfield Heights! The Alabama Avenue Apartments will help address the need for family-sized units in the District, including 26 three-bedroom apartment homes, 28 two-bedrooms, and 32 one-bedrooms. Nine units will be reserved for residents earning up to 60 percent of the area median income (AMI) and 59 units for those earning up to 50 percent AMI.

Redbrick LMD's development team is leading the charge on a new project that involves two mixed-use buildings on a 2.6-acre site at 633 Howard Road SE. In total, these buildings will encompass about 918,000 square feet, including 825 residential units, 151 short-term lodging units, and 24,407 square feet of retail space, all served by 527 underground parking spaces.

This project is a significant development for the area and accounts for nearly 10% of the city's affordable housing goals for its planning area. Bridge District leaders have been working on a community benefits agreement with its Ward 8 neighbors, which may include apprenticeship programs, reduced rent for local retailers, and nonprofit funding.

We're excited to see this project shape and contribute to the community's growth.
