Statement from the Young Democrats of America Jewish Caucus

We are devastated by and unequivocally condemn Hamas’ terrorist attack of civilians on sovereign Israeli land. This was an unconscionable attack on innocents and must be treated as such.

Israel is a small country and is home to half of the world’s Jewish population. Hamas’ slaughter on Saturday marked the deadliest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust. The scale of this attack, proportionally, would be as if 32,000 Americans — nearly 9,000 of them young people at a music festival — were murdered.

Now is the time to send aid to one of our strongest allies in their efforts to defend themselves. We applaud President Biden for his steadfast support of Israel now and always, and for the hundreds of Democratic leaders across the country who have condemned this violent act of terror.

Our pain is sadly compounded by the heartless assertions of some who cannot recognize us Jews as human beings deserving of life, but as props to advance unrelated political agendas.

Many Republicans heartlessly see our grief as a talking point. The chair of the Republican National Committee encouraged candidates to exploit the slaughter of Jews as a “great opportunity” to talk about their positions on Israel. Some candidates have listened, as many Republicans claim President Biden gave Iran funding that caused this attack — a blatant lie.

While we know to expect the worst from conservatives, we are horrified that some Young Democrats have applauded this unjustifiable attack and the subsequent violence unfolding in and around the Gaza Strip. It is sickening to see anyone cheer on war and terrorism in any capacity. It is actually scary for them to endorse Hamas, which explicitly advocates for Jewish genocide.

We cannot believe we have to say this, but no one deserves to be murdered because they live in a country with repulsive government leaders. To be clear: our caucus and every other major Democratic, centrist, and liberal Jewish organization has condemned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s anti-democratic and unjust policies. This includes our work partnering with Israeli liberals who fought his hyper-conservative coalition’s choice to ignore military intelligence and spend Israeli taxpayer money on settlement expansion instead of security reinforcement. History will not forget that his policies created the conditions for this unconscionable tragedy.

We call for the immediate protection of civilian life, for urgent steps to be taken to de-escalate this situation, and for all actors to prevent this situation spiraling toward even further tragedy. Our caucus members will continue to pray for peace and for all those whose loved ones are gone or in peril because of this terrorist attack.

Senator Dianne Feinstein was a trailblazer. She championed gun control and fought for LGBTQ rights. A proud advocate for our community. We mourn the passing of the first female Jewish US Senator. May her memory be a blessing.
