Although the 2024 Clear The Shelters adoption campaign has wrapped up, we are still FULL of animals urgently in need of loving forever homes. To help place more animals into homes, we have decided to waive adoption fees for all of our cat and dog residents who have been at the shelter for more than 90 days! That's right—more than 70 animals will have their adoption fees waived until the end of September!

While we have faced considerable financial pressure due to the influx of medical cases entering our facility over the last several weeks, we hope to raise $7,000 to reinvest in the medical needs at the shelter! To do so, we are excited to announce the return of the POOCH P**P PLOP fundraiser for its second year!

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬:
With a $100 donation, you may pick one of the 75 squares available. All squares must be selected via PoochP**pPlop2024.eventbrite.com. Pooch P**p Plop donations will be accepted from September 16 - 26 or until squares run out.

On September 27, we will release a dog into the play yard to do its business. Once a p**p has plopped, we will measure to see which square it landed in. The winning square will receive a $500 CASH PRIZE!* That's right, your $100 donation could win you $500!

The cash prize amount is dependent on all squares receiving a donation. In the event not all squares receive a donation, the prize amount will be $250. INJURED AND NEEDS YOUR HELP! Meet Dexter, a goofy, friendly 5-year-old Rottweiler with a heart full of love and a smile that never quits, even though that smile hides a lot of pain. Dexter came to Cedar Bend with a severe injury to his back leg. He has a torn ACL, making walking, running, and even going potty painful. But despite the pain, Dexter’s sweet, happy-go-lucky personality shines through and he still loves giving big, slobbery kisses too.

Unfortunately, Dexter's injury prohibits him from finding the loving home he deserves. And believe us, if it weren’t for this injury, he’d have already found his forever family—he’s THAT perfect! (✔️Good with dogs. ✔️Good with people. ✔️Potty trained. ✔️Devilishly handsome. The list goes on...)

Dexter's torn ACL is not a new injury-it's something he's been suffering with for some time now. We've been keeping him comfortable with pain and anti-inflammatory medication, however, according to the Veterinarians, a surgical fix is the only way for Dexter to regain full use of his leg.

The one thing standing between Dexter having a pain-free life is the cost of surgery, which is estimated to be around $4000. Simply put, we do not currently have the funding. We need your help to raise the funds for Dexter!

But there’s more:
We are also looking for either an adoptive or foster home for Dexter to go to after surgery. Once the procedure is done, Dexter will need a quiet, loving space to rest, heal, and get the follow-up care and rehab required for a full recovery. The shelter is not an ideal place for him to recuperate. Without an appropriate place to recover, we will not be able to even schedule his surgery... Could you be the one to help him heal and maybe even become his forever family?

Important announcement! CBHS currently has NO kennel space available.

It is with profound regret that CBHS must temporarily suspend the acceptance of owner surrenders, including all cats and all dogs over 30 pounds, effective immediately, due to no available kennel space.

Unfortunately, we have had an overwhelming number of stray and neglected animals enter our shelter over the last several weeks. We are now full to capacity with dogs and cats, and there are absolutely no additional kennels available.

We will continue to accommodate strays from Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County, and other contracted partners, but are unable to accept strays from outside Black Hawk County. Upon the availability of space, we will resume accepting owner surrenders. We sincerely appreciate your understanding.

At this time, we are urgently looking for individuals willing to adopt or foster our wonderful shelter pets, giving them a chance for a forever home. We have pets of various sizes, ages, breeds, and personalities waiting to be adopted.

Please, think about opening your heart to adoption! By welcoming animals into your heart and home, you can create extra kennel space and play a vital role in saving more lives.

HOW have these pups not been adopted?! Balto, Susie, and Boone were incredible at the Scooter's Coffee Block Party last weekend. They were polite, sweet, and as cute as can be.❤ And yes, we are talking about Balto and Susie, our two Second Chances dogs who have yet to find their forever homes!

Balto is a stunning boy with so much love to give. Despite his size, he is one of the best dogs to have along for car rides as he finds a spot to sit and is content and quiet the whole ride. On top of his car manners, he is easygoing on a leash and almost always responds to commands given. Balto seems to enjoy most types of treats and takes them nicely. Once relaxed, he likes to play with toys or receive all the belly rubs he can get. He would benefit from having an energy outlet or daily adventures.

Susie is a beautiful girl with a spontaneous personality. She does well in the car once she gets situated in a comfy spot to look out the window or lean her head on the humans nearby. Have a pup cup? She will gently take the cup and mind her own business as she enjoys her treat. Susie is a playful girl. She adores toys, whether it be playing by herself, with the humans, or with another doggie friend. She is still working on perfecting her leash-walking skills but overall is an intelligent, lovable dog once you get to know her.

Balto and Susie are both back at the shelter and are struggling to adjust to shelter life once again. They are confused about why they are back and why their forever families have not come to adopt them yet. Both of these dogs get along with other dogs. Balto actually prefers the company of another dog, whereas Susie just wants someone to hang out with. They are potty trained, and they know sit, place, come, and down.

Both dogs have completed over a month's worth of training at Rock River, and their adoption fee includes one free training class so the new owners can learn all of the great obedience commands each dog knows.

We are looking for an adoptive family or a family that would even consider fostering Balto or Susie until they can find their forever homes. They are both desperately needing a place to call their own. Please help us help Balto and Susie!

There are less than two weeks left of the 2024 Clear the Shelters campaign, and CBHS is still FULL of so many sweet, loving pets looking for their fur-ever homes. We understand that not everyone is able to adopt, and that’s why we’re offering a new way for you to make a difference in the lives of our homeless pets!🐾

In addition to our discounted adoption fees, until September 10th, CBHS is asking the public to help sponsor adoption fees with the ultimate goal of being able to waive every animal's adoption fee during the Clear The Shelters campaign! Kennel Attendants at CBHS are incredibly hardworking and animal lovers through and through! They are the ones who clean the dogs, cats, and critter kennels daily, making sure everyone gets fed and has fresh water throughout the day. This heat is ruff!

We have already received one report from Waterloo Animal Control of a dog overheating and dying due to it being tied outside for 45 minutes with no shade or water. Animal control is responding to numerous complaints of dogs left in cars or stuck in the hot elements. PLEASE, keep your pets safe!
