This is Humans of Jefferson. 🌟 Meet Katie Richards ’24, a recent graduate from Jefferson with an associate degree in zoo technology. In June, Katie completed a pilot internship, Raccoon Rehab: Baby Boot Camp, Charles N. Gordon Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc. in Earlville, NY. This experience added to Katie’s repertoire, which includes working with elephants, ravens, and primates during her time in Jefferson’s zoo technology program. As an intern, Katie took charge of designing and executing daily care and treatment plans for raccoons at all life stages, including neonates and adults. Responsibilities included decision-making on care stages, bottle feeding, and designing enriching activities. She also maintained feeding stations and observed two surgical procedures, an amputation and a facial reconstruction, for which she was responsible for surgery prep, post-surgical monitoring, administering medications, and daily treatment charts. Reflecting on the internship, Katie shared, “This internship was a fantastic opportunity to utilize my knowledge and skills from Zoo Technology to care for the raccoons while also learning how wildlife rehab works and helping with complex veterinary procedures. It was a great opportunity to broaden my horizons in the field and do many things I had never done before.” Executive Director Sarah Holmes Bookbinder, CWR, Gordon Wildlife, praised Katie, stating, “Katie was an incredible participant, far exceeding our expectations of an intern, leaving us very impressed with the breadth and level of professionalism of JCC’s training program.” Katie added, “My outstanding Zoo Technology professors were the reason I was able to be successful at this internship. This program is quite remarkable and produces capable, highly qualified professionals. Without them, I would not have nearly as much experience and knowledge of animal care.” Katie plans to attend the University of Georgia in the fall to pursue a bachel

Jefferson offers 13 microcredentials for professionals who want to upskill or seek career advancement. Consisting of 3-4 courses, microcredentials are qualifications focused on specific industries and achievable in a short amount of time. Most programs are part-time financial aid eligible.
