It’s been just 2 1/2 years since Gary has passed from Glioblastoma - terminal brain cancer - yet it seems like yesterday. Yesterday, where he was fighting for as many days he could have here on earth with all of his family and friends. Gary was able to have 13 months with all of us, when the average length of life once diagnosed with Glioblastoma is only 8 months. The 5 year survival rate is only 6.9%. There is no cure or remission for this devastating cancer.

Gary’s Ride: garysrideiowa.org

Tomorrow would of been Gary’s 62nd birthday! This was the last birthday he got to celebrate. He embraced life, even when diagnosed with Glioblastoma, knowing that he had very limited time left here on earth to celebrate with his loved ones! Oh how he celebrated! He lived each day to the fullest, even with the limitations created from the location of his tumor and from his brain surgery. After his second brain surgery which created more limitations, he still never stopped living his life until his last breath. People might say, that his 13 months of life since his diagnosis was a very difficult and challenging life. Gary would say, that his 13 months of life since his diagnosis was a gift from God, because he got to continue to embrace his blessed life, live it to it’s fullest, love, laugh, see his closest friends and all those he loved, to be the best ever “papa” to his favorite grandchildren, to be the very best husband and best friend to his “bride” (yep, that would be me), to be the very best stepfather and mentor to Nick, to be the very best brother/brother-in-law/son and the list goes on. He always looked at life as a gift and as an opportunity for him to give the very best of himself to all that he encountered.

Tomorrow, will you help in ringing in his “heavenly” 62nd birthday by making a donation to Gary’s Ride, Inc. This is “our” non profit that funds MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center for terminal brain cancer patients. I know Gary would be honored and humbled, along with myself, for your donations to enable these patients and future patients to be able to embrace the “best life” of what they have remaining here on earth. Please check out our website for all the details. Please feel free to share this with your friends on facebook too.

Forever humbled and grateful - - - Kristin

Happy Heavenly 62nd Birthday Gary - - “our hero”

HOW DO YOU/I/WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN 2023?!

It’s a question that we are all, or most all of us are asking, as we look to another new year. How will I make a difference? What will that difference be? When should I start making that difference?

These are questions I ask myself A LOT, especially since Gary’s passing from Glioblastoma May 17, 2021. My who/what/where/why/how in making a difference all stemmed from Gary’s passing. I knew without a doubt that I had to and must make a difference for all of the loved ones/our loved ones in this world who will be diagnosed with Glioblastoma. That’s why I started Gary’s Ride, a new non profit organization that works with MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center to help patients and their families as they traverse this very challenging and difficult terminal cancer journey.

A new year is right around the corner, time is ticking, and the big question again you ask yourself is: HOW WILL I MAKE A DIFFERENCE? This is YOUR opportunity to change lives, enhance lives, bring hope, bring opportunities by donating and/or getting involved with Gary’s Ride.

Please check out: garysrideiowa.org

See the difference that you will be making and know that YOU make a difference, YOU matter in this very special cause.

So, go make that difference by donating, and be that difference that will shine so others can see!!! Also, please sign up for Gary’s Ride coming up May 20, 2023. I’m forever grateful and humbled by your support.

Blessings to you all in 2023 -

I BELIEVE we ALL can make a difference! As Gary would say: “Bring it on”!

Dave Mable, incredible photographer and human being, took pictures of our FIRST Gary's Annual Brain Cancer Bike Ride. It was a wonderful experience to see all the people show up on a very cold and windy day, that loved and cared about Gary and also cared about the cause - to give so terminal brain cancer patients won't have the terminal in their diagnosis. They will be able to live a life that has a long and happy ending!! Thank you to all the wonderful people who helped make this event come to fruition. I am forever grateful and humbled. I'll see all of you next year, the third Saturday of May, 2023. Put it on your calendar as an event that you don't want to miss. There will be lots more fun coming in 2023. Until then, live your life with gratitude and give the best of you to all that you meet!!

MAY IS BRAIN CANCER/TUMOR AWARENESS MONTH

GARY was a “leader” in so many different areas of life. He was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme Stage 4, terminal Brain Cancer, April 2020 and lead his battle with dignity, fortitude, faith and a knowing that no matter what, everything will be alright. Unfortunately, he lost that “lead” May 17, 2021. This is a Brain Cancer that doesn’t ever allow leaders to finish. So, please with all the gratitude and humbleness of my heart, give so researchers can find ways to not only extend the lives of these brave individuals, but also cures for this devastating cancer. Click the link and help all of these patients and future patients “lead” to a longer and better life! Forever grateful!

“OUR HERO”

Referred to by many as “our hero” because of his courage, his faithfulness, his strength, his perseverance, his kindness, his commitment to helping family and friends. Gary faced many battles in his life - open heart surgery, shoulder and knee surgeries and an almost life ending bicycle accident. Gary used all of his God given gifts mentioned above when he was diagnosed with terminal Brain Cancer (Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade IV) April 2020. Gary fought gallantly for 13+ months and finally the devastating cancer took away his sword of courage and bravery. Gary passed May 17, 2021. Gary will be forever missed and forever loved because of who this incredible human being was to so many of us!

MERCYONE DES MOINES FOUNDATION

We have joined with MercyOne Des Moines Foundation to help make my wish for Gary to come true and that wish is: MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center the leading research and treatment center for Brain Cancer and especially for Glioblastoma. I know it may seem like a big and broad wish and how can it be obtainable and I say how can it not be??!! The start is with you and your friends, and through their friends, etc. There are so many of you or know of someone that has been affected by cancer and possibly brain cancer. It’s a tough road to travel, especially when you know it is a road that ends, such as my husband’s. So, let’s join hands and donate to start this beautiful wish/vision to where someday and I hope someday soon, we can all see a road that doesn’t end, but, a road that leads to hope, to longer lives, to cures for these deadly cancers. Let’s do this!!!! I am forever grateful for all of your help!
