2023 in Paul's Epistles
Romans 1:5
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,
Romans, the great epistle of justification by faith, is also the great epistle of the obedience of faith. The Protestant paranoia that a call for obedience somehow dilutes the pure gospel of justification is misplaced. Such anxiety misses the point. The gospel issues a command, an imperial summons; the appropriate response is obedience. When Paul thinks of Jesus as Lord, he thinks of the world as being called to obedience to Jesus’ lordship. His apostolic commission is not to offer people a new religious option but to summon them to allegiance to Jesus, which will mean abandoning other loyalties.
Romans, Story of God Bible Commentary, Michael Bird
Let that resonate for a moment.
2023 in Paul's Epistles
Romans 1:1–4
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
"Jesus had to take on flesh and enter into the old age in order to inaugurate the new age that is characterized by the Holy Spirit. The contrast between the flesh and the Spirit is quite similar conceptually to Paul’s remarks about the humiliation and exaltation of Christ in Phil. 2:6–11. Paul does not disdain the humiliation of Christ. It is a stage that is, however, left behind upon his exaltation. The age dominated by the flesh is one of weakness, while the age of the Spirit is one of power."
Romans, Thomas R. Schreiner
The Incarnation of the Word
"The Word, therefore, in His loving-kindness, visits the earth, from which He was never really absent. He sees the evil and pities mankind, and takes a body similar to ours. This He prepares for Himself in the womb of a pure and stainless virgin, and personally appropriates it.
This body He offered to the Father as a sacrifice on behalf of all, to do away with death; and by this offering He restored to us incorruption, and by His Resurrection He abolished death for ever."
Athanasius, African Church Father
Did you know the average reader can read through the entire Bible in one year by only reading about four chapters a day? That amounts to around 20-25 minutes per day.
Go ahead, and give it a shot in 2023. You can do it, and you will not regret it. Plus, you'll discover truths about God that will blow your mind.
Psalm 119:9–16
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. 10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! 11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. 12 Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! 13 With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. 14 In the way of your testimonies, I delight as much as in all riches. 15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. 16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’—yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’” James 4:13-15
"Tomorrow is not promised. We may plan for it, but we may not assume we can control it. God’s mercy alone enables us to awaken to each new day. The sin of presumption is exposed as folly when we realize that our very life is grounded in God’s sustaining gifts. We cannot ignore our limitations and life’s brevity, but we can allow these realities to shape and transform our thinking and our decisions for the sake of His glory. So consider your plans for today, for tomorrow, for next year, and for further on in your life. Did you pray about them? Have you acknowledged that His plans are sovereign and that all of yours are contingent on His? Lift your plans up to Him now and place them in His hands. You cannot control the future. But you do not need to, for you know the one who does."
Truth for Life, Alistair Begg

Studies in the Gospels
John 17:9
I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
“In this verse, our Lord begins that part of His prayer, which is especially intercessory and proceeds to name things that He asks for His disciples, from this point down to the end of the chapter. It may be easy to remember that the things He asks may be divided into four heads. He prays that His disciples may be (a) KEPT, (b) SANCTIFIED, (c) UNITED, (d) and WITH HIM in glory. Four more essential things cannot be desired for believers.
Jesus’ intercession for us accurately exhibits Christ’s mind toward believers, His desires for believers, the active interest He takes in believers, and the graces He is pleased to see in believers. Above all, let us believe that if we seek for ourselves the same four things that Jesus here names, we have a Friend in heaven Who will take care that we do not seek in vain and will make our prayer effectual.” JC Ryle
Mark 5:19
And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
“How much there is in these simple words of our Lord! What thoughts they ought to stir up in the hearts of all true Christians!—“Go home and tell thy friends.”—Home is the place above all others where the child of God ought to make his first endeavors to do good. Home is the place where he is most continually seen, and where the reality of his grace ought most truly to appear. Home is the place where his best affections ought to be concentrated.
Home is the place where he should strive daily to be a witness for Christ. Home is the place where he was daily doing harm by his example, so long as he served the world. Home is the place where he is specially bound to be a living epistle of Christ, so soon as he has been mercifully taught to serve God. May we all remember these things daily! May it never be said of us, that we are saints abroad but wicked by our own fireside,—talkers about religion abroad, but worldly and ungodly at home!” JC Ryle
Soli Deo Gloria,

Studies in the Gospels
Matthew 19:29
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.
No Losers in the Kingdom of Christ
“We may rest assured that no one becomes a loser by following Christ. We may seem to suffer loss for a time when we first become Christians. We may be cast down by afflictions because of our new commitment. But let us rest assured we will never be labeled losers in the long run. Christ can raise up friends for us who shall more than compensate for those we lost. Christ can open hearts and homes to us, far more warm and hospitable than those that closed against us. Above all, Christ can give us peace, joy, and hope, which will outweigh every earthly thing that we have lost for His sake. His Word says so and it shall be so. Let us trust it, and remember we are winners in Jesus.” JC Ryle

Please join us in prayer, that God may keep and grow these young men for His glory!
