Often, families are confused when they visit their loved one who was buried two weeks ago. They see a mound of chunky dirt piled on the grave, probably sunken in a place or two and completely barren of any sign of grass. Hollywood has us believing that magically, the grave will have a golf course finished a few days after burial.

Cemetery maintenance workers explained their process for getting the grave back into a lawn finish. Mother Nature tends to be the aide or deterrent. During dry weather, the dirt needs to sit for about a month. Then the grave can be tamped. Black dirt can be placed on top and depending on weather, grass seed may be spread. The ground will settle more and after a few rains, the grave will have that
sunken appearance. It may take two or three times to add more dirt, depending on rain, freezing, groundwater, types of soil, and other ground conditions. If there are trees nearby, it can be harder to get a smooth surface at all, much less to get grass to grow on top of tree roots.

When a headstone needs to be moved to dig the grave, it is best not to put it back in place for quite a period, sometimes months, depending on all the above-mentioned conditions. A sunken headstone or monument is not desirable. Best to leave it off to the side while the ground is settling.

Getting seeds to take and grow seems to be challenging in many areas. It is usually climate-dependent. Too much rain washes it away or drowns it out. Without rain, it seems the seeding just does not take hold.

Some places on the grounds simply don’t grow luscious grass, or any for that matter. In some areas, winter burials settle better than summer burials due to moisture from the snow.

It is not unusual for a burial to take a year to settle to ground level. Mother Nature likes to remind us that she is the one in charge.
