A customer asked me how much it would cost to make a custom knife for them.

I answered: “$1200.”

They replied: “That’s so expensive for a knife!”

I asked: “How much do you think it would cost you?”

They answered: “Maybe $120 max. It’s just a knife, right?”

I said: “For $120, I invite you to make it yourself.”

“But… I don’t know how to make a knife.”

“For $120, I’ll teach you. You’ll save $1080 and gain the knowledge for next time.”

That seemed fair to them, so they agreed.

“But to start, you’ll need some tools: a forge, anvil, grinder, belt sander, drill press, quenching tank, and various hammers and tongs.”

“I don’t have all that equipment, and I can’t buy it all for one knife.”

“Well, for another $300, I’ll rent my tools to you so you can make it.”

“Okay,” they said.

“Great! I’ll see you Tuesday to start the work.”

“But I can’t do Tuesday; I only have time today.”

“I’m sorry, but I’m only available Tuesday to teach you and lend you my tools. Other days are booked with other customers.”

“That means I’ll have to sacrifice my Tuesday and rearrange my schedule.”

“Also, remember you’ll need to account for nonproductive factors: taxes, insurance, fuel, and so on.”

“Oh no! To handle all that, I’d spend more money and waste a lot of time!”

“Can you do it sooner?”

“I can prepare everything for you. You’ll need to load the truck either Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Be there by 6 AM to avoid traffic jams and be on time.”

“At 6 AM? That’s too early for me! I usually get up later.”

After some thought, they said: “You know, I think it’s better if you handle the job. I’d rather pay you the $1200. If I did it, it wouldn’t be perfect and would cost me a lot more.”
