The roots of some of America’s favorite music genre’s like R&B, soul, jazz, disco, folk, hip-hop and more all stem from black musical influence, so in this final week of Black History Month, we’d like to spotlight some of the industry’s most influential black artists and performers — check it out!

Black History Month is not only a commemoration of past achievements, but also an acknowledgement of the work that African Americans continue to do to help the country live up to its promise of democracy and equality. African Americans remain underrepresented across major industries, especially in politics. Check out these three elected officials who burst the seam of possibility and changed the world of politics forever.

*Nelson Mandela is not an American citizen but we feel his story deserves a spot on this list for national recognition and for changing the entire trajectory of South Africa’s future.

February 4th is national ! Rosa Parks Day was first established in 2000 by the California State Legislature in honor of the civil rights leader, Rosa Parks. Parks was born on February 4th, 1913. She was 42-years-old on that monumental day when she stood her ground on a Cleveland Avenue bus while on her way home from work in Montgomery, Alabama.

Fun Fact: Many cities and bus companies across the U.S. eliminate fares on Rosa Parks Day!
