LA Flashback: Silent film star Harold Lloyd's year round Christmas tree, Beverly Hills. Silent film actor, photographer, and renaissance man, Harold Lloyd built his 15-acre estate known as Greenacres in Benedict Canyon in Beverly Hills and it really sparkled at Christmastime; his overstuffed Christmas tree holding more than 5,000 glass and handmade ornaments was famous. As the collection of ornaments grew over the years, so did the tree. It eventually required several trees to be put together along with reinforced branches and stainless steel bolts.
It took from Thanksgiving until Christmas to decorate the tree. Over the years, Lloyd had collected thousands of ornaments from all over the world. The tree ultimately became a year-round feature (artificial by this point) in the sitting room. The 45,000 square foot, 44-room mansion known as Greenacres was Lloyd's home until 1971; it was declared a National Historic Place in 1984 though the acreage was subdivided when sold by the estate in 1975.
