RIP Maggie
Dame Maggie Smith, who passed away today at age 89, was known for her roles in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, but she had a long career in theater—over seven decades long, and even got her start there. In her lifetime, Smith won two Academy Awards, four Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, six Laurence Olivier Awards, and many more acccolades.
She made her Broadway debut at age 22 playing several roles in the review New Faces of '56. Here she is in one of those roles in an image from our archive.

In search of work songs for my September ‘Seasons & Celebrations Radio’ station. Looking for traditional union type songs like Woody Guthrie, but also contemporary artists like Donna Summer singing ‘She Works Hard for the Money.’
My very first job was a shoeshine boy workin' the bars on Geneva Avenue in Dorchester, Massachusetts. I partnered with my buddy, Mark Holland, and we would alternate who went in first in case there was only one customer. My greatest fear were guys with white socks! Thanks for any musical suggestions.
