As we journey deeper into the realm of psychedelics, it's important to draw lessons from the path taken with cannabis legalization. ๐ We're eager to hear your insights โ do you consider cannabis legalization a success or a failure? What strategies can we apply when approaching the world of psychedelics?
โ๏ธA recent study conducted by experts from the University of Florida, University of Southern California, and Purdue University, revealed a notable decline in direct payments from opioid manufacturers to pain medicine physicians following the enactment of medical cannabis laws, and observed that physicians in states with medical cannabis laws are issuing fewer opioid prescriptions. Do you use cannabis for pain management?
Contrary to popular belief, cannabis has actually been proven to NOT be a gateway drug! A study from the University of Colorado's Boulder campus found that "legalizing cannabis at the state level will not lead users to take other illicit drugs or develop substance abuse disorders." Who else grew up hearing cannabis was a gateway drug? ๐โโ๏ธ
ICYMI: Cannabis may be moving to the Schedule 3 substance list, meaning it will no longer be in the same category as heroin ๐ซ While reclassifying cannabis to schedule 3 may offer certain advantages for the industry, it will not bridge the divide between state and federal cannabis regulations. Consequently, the vast majority of state-sanctioned 'adult use' or 'recreational' cannabis transactions would remain illegal. We're hoping for rescheduling and then decriminalizing! What's your take?
The current opioid crisis and a mental health epidemic is growing. Plant medicine holds immense potential in addressing these challenges. Through responsible research and regulation, we can tap into the therapeutic properties of nature by boosting the body's endocannabinoid system with cannabis and exploring the potential of psychedelics to alleviate mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. ๐ฑ
Medical benefits for plant medicine are real and valid, but harm reduction shouldn't take a back seat in the conversation. What are some of the best harm reduction policies and practices you've seen implemented?
Having blazed a trail in the cannabis space, the Manzuri Law team draws on experience from the earliest days of the cannabis industry to address and mitigate crossover issues in the emerging psychedelics industry. In November of 2022, Coloradians voted to approve Proposition 122, known as the Natural Medicine Health Act, a citizen-initiated measure to decriminalize certain psychedelic substances and create a regulated facilitated use program. Check out the timeline for implementing regulations โฌ๏ธ ๐January 1, 2024: The Department must adopt rules to establish the qualifications, education and training requirements for facilitators and rules necessary to approve facilitator training programs. ๐By September 30, 2024: The Department must adopt rules necessary to implement the regulated natural medicine access program and begin accepting applications for licensure. All decisions regarding licensing applications must be made within 60 days of submission. ๐ After June 1, 2026: The Board may implement rules to approve and regulate dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ibogaine, and mescaline (excluding peyote) for facilitated use. The Department may prepare proposed rules for the addition of any of these substances in anticipation of the Boardโs recommendation to regulate. โ๏ธ Reschedule vs. Deschedule โฌ๏ธ Tammy and I recorded this prior to the HHS recommendation to reschedule cannabis to Schedule 3 on August 29th! We were practically fortune-tellers ๐ Changing the classification of cannabis, rather than completely removing it from the controlled substances list, fails to address the root issue: Cannabis, as a natural plant, shouldn't be subject to federal regulation! It's worth noting that alcohol, tobacco, and even caffeine remain unregulated substances, and the same principle should have extended to cannabis. Here's a quick overview of the current scheduling and the substances involved ๐ โธ Schedule 1: Heroin, LSD, cannabis, ecstasy, peyote. โธ Schedule 2: Vicodin, cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, OxyContin. โธ Schedule 3: Tylenol with codeine, ketamine, anabolic steroids, testosterone. โธ Schedule 4: Xanax, Ambien, Valium. โธ Schedule 5: Robitussin AC, Lomotil, Motofen. Are you in favor of rescheduling or descheduling?
Patiently waiting for the day that people can finally grasp the fact that there are successful stoners ๐ฏ
Like if you're in support of SB 58! ๐ Last month, the California State Assembly Health Committee voted to approve Senator Scott Weinerโs Senate Bill 58 (โSB 58โ), which aims to both decriminalize certain psychedelics and create a regulatory framework to govern the supervised therapeutic use of psychedelics. Having passed the Health Committee, SB 58 goes next to the Assembly Appropriations Committee, which will then decide to pass the bill if the state has the budget to fund it; This vote is expected to occur later this month. If the Appropriations Committee approves the bill, it will then go to the Assembly floor. There, every Assemblymember will vote to either approve or reject the bill. If it receives enough votes of approval, the bill will end up on Governor Gavin Newsomโs desk to be signed into law. More on the blog! ๐ฅ: @mr.babies
