Bob Dylan's Greatest Rejected Album Tracks
AN EVENING WITH MICHAEL GRAY
LINK - TICKETS & INFO.
https://tseac.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/873646452
We're proud to present the pioneer of Dylan Studies, Michael Gray, author of Song & Dance Man: The Art Of Bob Dylan; The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia; and Outtakes On Bob Dylan: Selected Writings 1967-2021.
For his 2024 live appearance he'll be discussing, and playing, his choice of the greatest tracks Dylan ever left off his own albums-not outtake versions of album tracks, but whole songs Bob recorded at the sessions and then rejected altogether... and yet are major works.
This entertaining talk with audio and footage is in two halves with an interval.
His books may be immense but there’s nothing dry about Michael’s talks, and he has always been in demand on North American college campuses and in the UK & Ireland at arts theatres, arts centres and festivals.
He has appeared at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio, the University of Texas at Austin, and as a keynote speaker at Dylan Conferences at the universities of Vienna, Bristol, Cardiff, Munich and Southern Denmark; he's spoken at the Einstein Forum in Potsdam, the York Festival of Ideas and arts festivals from Bath to the Shetlands.
Michael Gray’s events are always lively, spontaneous and acute, and offer a thoroughly entertaining, fresh account of Dylan’s achievement.

Join Bob Dylan Center Director Steven Jenkins for an online discussion with Terri Thal about her recently published memoir “My Greenwich Village: Dave, Bob and Me,” in which the pioneering artist manager — of Dylan, Dave Van Ronk (also her husband) and The Holy Modal Rounders — recounts the freewheeling days of the early ‘60s folk music scene. From booking gigs at coffee houses for the Roche sisters and palling around with Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton and Suze Rotolo to making the first known live recording of Dylan performing a set of original songs, Thal was a mainstay of the Village and has remained passionately committed to folk music and social justice.
Zoom in for this virtual chat as Thal shares stories and fields questions from Jenkins and attendees.
The book, “My Greenwich Village: Dave, Bob and Me,” is available for purchase from the Bob Dylan Center’s online store here.

Bob Dylan has come a long way from Hibbing, Minnesota. He has sold over 48 million records. His songs have won ten Grammy Awards, one Academy Award and one Golden Globe Award. Considered influential by those artists who themselves have influenced others, Bob Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2016 the boy from Hibbing received the Nobel Prize in Literature. How did he get from there to here? The meteoric rise and sustained excellence of Bob Dylan can be traced directly to his artistic courage and curiosity, leading him down the many literal and figurative byways that have filled his songs with a complexity previously absent from popular music. There are many people interested in Bob Dylan, from those with a lifetime fascination to those who only dimly know the name. His rejection of folk purity angered some and his embrace of electricity angered others. This course will approach those controversies and others from an artist’s perspective: “Since you can’t please everybody, you have to please yourself.” We will explore Dylan’s rise and sustained success, his early inspirations, lyrics and artistic courage. Come gather ’round and listen to some songs, discuss lyrics and view vintage performances of the Poet Laureate of Rock and Roll.
Gary has a B.S. in English from UW Whitewater, and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from UW Milwaukee. He went on to teach high school English for 35 years, receiving a Kohl Fellowship award in 2004. Having no personal discernible musical or artistic talent himself, Gary has a deep appreciation for Bob Dylan’s musical and artistic genius and is excited to be teaching at The Clearing. “I like to be part of the World of Ideas, and from what I understand The Clearing is one such world, and a beautiful part of one of my favorite places as well.”

This beautifully illustrated book delves into music legend and social justice activist Staples’ life, highlighting her family, faith, commitment to civil rights and illustrious career.
“In an era marked with debates over what children should or shouldn’t be reading, we believe ‘Bridges Instead of Walls’ will inspire and enlighten children of all backgrounds,” said Steve Higgins, managing director of American Song Archives, which oversees both centers. “The story is a universal testament to the power of love, unity and resilience.”
The 2015 recipient of the Woody Guthrie Prize, Staples helped celebrate the opening of the Bob Dylan Center in May 2022 with a memorable concert at Cain’s Ballroom, and performed again in May 2024 to celebrate the opening of its exhibit, “How Many Roads: Bob Dylan and His Changing Times, 1961-1964.” Immediately prior to that concert, the Bob Dylan Center announced the recipients of the inaugural Mavis Staples Freedom Highway Essay Award, for which students reflected on the ways in which music can serve as a catalyst for positive change, for which 11th– and 12th-grade students in Tulsa Public Schools reflected on the ways in which music serves as a catalyst for positive change.
The book giveaway begins on Staples’ birthday, July 10, and continues while supplies last. To help
kickoff, a reading of the book will take place on the Guthrie Green at 10 a.m. that morning with a
singalong and cupcakes as part of their Summer Story Time series. To receive a copy, parents must visit either the Bob Dylan Center or Woody Guthrie Center with their qualifying child.
The initiative is made possible through the generous support of Bob Ramsey and Jenny Norton.

Here's what we're listening to this week at the Bob Dylan Center®:
"As summer arrives and I begin to contend with the intense Tulsa heat—having recently relocated from fog-shrouded San Francisco—I’ve had “In the Summertime” on repeat. A cool breeze of a tune from Dylan’s often overlooked Shot of Love album—the third in the “Christian trilogy” that so shocked even his most devout followers in the late 1970s and early ‘80s—“In the Summertime” finds Dylan reflecting on a season when “I was in your presence for an hour or so/Or was it a day?/I truly don’t know.” This fleeting connection, whether to a deity or perhaps a more earthbound loved one—the latter possibility of which I find more relatable—both haunts and upholds the song’s narrator, sustained as he is by a time when “you were closer to me than my next of kin.” Dylan couches this revery in an easygoing groove, punctuating the laid-back arrangement with casually slapdash harmonica solos. The song fades out after three-and-a-half minutes, vanishing quickly into memory, just like summer."

EVENT: PANART'S EXHIBITIONS
Fenimore Art Museum
Bob Dylan Remastered: Drawings from the Road
Fenimore, Cooperstown NY, USA
May 25, 2024 - September 15, 2024
https://pan-art-connections.com/exhibition/bob-dylan-remastered-drawings-from-the-road/
Remastered celebrates another impressive aspect of music legend Bob Dylan’s creativity: his talents in visual art. A dedicated performer, Dylan started what is known as his “Never Ending Tour” in 1988; between 1989 and 1992, as he traveled through North America, Europe, and Asia, he began sketching glimpses of his life on the road. The resultant pencil and charcoal drawings were a way to “refocus a restless mind,” as Dylan claimed, providing him a new outlet to celebrate the comings and goings of everyday life.
Dylan made three different collections out of the original drawings by “remastering” these works, adding vivid watercolor and gouache to digital enlargements of the drawings to create a new, special edition set entitled The Drawn Blank Series, which is the focus of this exhibition.
All three series were first seen in public during an exhibition at the prestigious Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz Museum in Germany in 2007. After one additional show in Helsinki, the works returned to Dylan. Today, The Drawn Blank Series is owned by a private collector while the other two sets were sold to a private gallery. Dylan’s work has been compared to modern masters such as Henri Matisse and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. His skills as a draughtsman, in keeping with his talents as a songwriter, lie with his ability to tell an engrossing tale through the simplest and most evocative means. Bob Dylan Remastered: Drawings from the Road features ninety-two unique, original signed works.
The exhibition is curated by Ms. Katharine J. Wright, Consulting Curator.
