As part of West Point’s Project’s Day and Research Symposium, the Department of English and Philosophy and the Robotics Research Center (RRC), continue their collaboration demonstrating the ethical challenges of autonomous weapon systems. The collaboration has students enrolled in Philosophy 201, the philosophy and ethical reasoning course that all Cadets take, program different amounts of autonomy and other variables in robots to detect and engage different colored balloons in different scenarios. The balloon colors represent the different groups one might interact with on the battlefield, from friendly forces, non-combatants, and combatants This work feeds into the larger military’s efforts to use AI ethically and effectively in modern warfare. #goarmy
