Lately we’ve been seeing so many other businesses make statements regarding their work being ADA compliant. This is truly a false selling point!
So let’s look at what they really should be telling you… ADA truly only applies to public places and businesses; their standards are a good guide to follow when looking at measurements and heights for different in-home features such as doorways. This however is not always perfect for all people and it is often better to consider a person’s individual conditions when making modifications to a person’s home. Unless the home is constructed to include a business ADA simply does not apply.
Something that is valuable to know though is that any home that is considered a multi family dwelling that is not owned but rented or leased must provide reasonable accommodations/ modifications to make them accessible. This means that a rental agency or landlord may need to provide grab bars or widen a doorway for a person to continue to live in said home. This is covered by the Fair Housing Act. It is much more applicable homes!
If you have questions about how to make your home more accessible for you and your individual needs please contact us! We have specialized training to help you make sure the modifications being made are helpful to you!

When you consider who should provide you with services for home safety, including grab bar placement and installation, it’s important to know who is making these recommendations. In a study published in The American Journal of Preventative Medicine they found that “The interventions with the potential to help the greatest number of older adults were those that provided home modification delivered by an occupational therapist.”
