Recently it was Professional Interview Week at Sagemont Prep, during which our Financial Literacy students participated in a mock job search process. Students had already researched potential careers, and prepared their own professional cover letter and resume. Once they selected their path to success, the students researched a prospective position and company. Our future doctors, lawyers, engineers, managers, etc. came to school in their formal business attire to participate in a full-length interview with a pre-selected Sagemont Prep teacher or administrator. Students overcame their initial nervousness to make this a great practical experience for all. The extension of this experience was a series of guest speakers to expose students to a wide array of potential career paths. Their first guest speaker was Special Agent Mark Myers with the F.B.I. who spoke to students about his experiences with the federal government and position on the Miami division Counter Terrorism squad and as the team leader for the Miami S.W.AT. team.

Our Early Childhood students enjoyed a hands on learning experience during their field trip to Butterfly World, the culminating activity of their yearlong Sagemont Prep Signature Project, The Bees and Butterflies Life Cycle Simulation. Through the Signature Project process, students explored the scientific process through questioning, observation, research, making hypotheses, and analyzing the results of each, while comparing and contrasting. A Sagemont Prep project experience is incomplete without ongoing real-life experiences outside the classroom to foster additional connections, and the excursion to Butterfly World provided this invaluable learning extension.

A celebrated annual tradition of the senior experience is the Sagemont Prep Senior Marketplace. Delivered through the Micro-economic course, all seniors work in groups to collaborate and develop a marketplace. Students are tasked with developing a business model together. This process includes documentation of all aspects of the business, including a business plan, strategic marketing, understanding of supply and demand, conducting a cost analysis and ultimately starting up a company. All the profit earned from this signature project is a fundraiser for the senior class to offset their annual senior week.

Lyliana Caceres, an Interact Club member and a freshman at Sagemont Prep, presented the idea of creating a book club to inspire elementary school students to read. As a part of the Reading Across America initiative, she has presented a plan to her club to travel to the Lower Campus, and spend an hour with students in 2nd - 3rd and an hour with 4th - 5th grade, discussing the chosen book and completing corresponding activities. The club members excitedly agreed to support Lyliana in implementing her awe-inspiring idea. Yesterday they enjoyed their first meeting with our younger students. The theme for March was ‘Celebrate Diversity’ and the book chosen for elementary school students was, Crown for Corina. Interact members read the book to the younger students, and engaged them in a conversation. Later, they helped the elementary students in creating the crowns of their own. Lyliana and the rest of the Interact Club members are excited and encouraged to continue the activity in the future!

Ms. Vecere’s Marine Science classes enjoyed a captivating guest speaker before break. Bella Negret, an eighth-grader, proudly introduced her father, owner of Cornbred Corals, a remarkable local business dedicated to the cultivation and trade of coral. Students viewed a fascinating array of coral fragments and Mr. Negret engaged the class in an illuminating discussion about his profession and its direct relevance to the curriculum. The opportunity for our students to witness coral up close was incredible and left students inspired by the wonders of the natural world!

Ms. Amigorena’s U.S. History classes recently participated in a Harkness discussion on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Students studied and discussed all facets of the event, to include moral, political and economic implications. Harkness discussions promote collaborative and student-centered learning experiences. They encourage active engagement, critical thinking, and communication skills among students. Through Harkness discussions, students learn to express their ideas, listen to others’ perspectives, and build upon each other’s contributions. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of the subject matter and cultivates skills essential for effective collaboration, such as empathy, respect, and open-mindedness. Additionally, Harkness discussions empower students to take ownership of their learning process and develop the confidence to articulate and defend their viewpoints in a respectful and constructive manner.
