Inspiration for medical education
Soon after finishing college, Olivia learned she was in heart failure, and doctors didn't know why. On the list for a new heart, Olivia had a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, implanted in her chest. The battery-controlled device pumps blood instead of the diseased part of her heart.
A year later, she had a successful heart transplant at 22. But 7 years later, Olivia's twin sister, Sofia, would get the same diagnosis. Genetic tests showed they have a rare mutation called irreversible dilated cardiomyopathy that caused their hearts to enlarge and then deteriorate.
Sofia is not yet on the transplant list, but she is living with an LVAD, just like her twin sister had.
Olivia's transplant inspired her to go into medicine. Three months and a day after her surgery, she started working as a medical scribe, then an emergency medical technician, medical assistant and medical technician at her local hospital. Sofia hopes to follow in her sister's footsteps.
"Sofia and I now share the same goal," Olivia said. "We both want to help people understand that they're not alone, that there are resources for them."
