What a great evening spent with my friends at League 42 as they unveiled the new Jackie Robinson statue with a great event featuring some special guests including Bob Kendrick of the Negro Leagues Museum in KC, former MLB players including C.C. Sabathia, Dellin Betances, and Jeremy Guthrie. The league players on hand unveiled the statue. It was a real pleasure to be on hand. The silver linings of the unfortunate event that led this replacement statue are the national attention on this great local urban league and lots of investment that will help it grow and become even better. So proud to be part of this community.

Be there tonight for this great event at League 42!

Tonight, we'll be unveiling the Jackie Robinson statue in a ceremony at historic McAdams Park beginning at 6 p.m. It will be a joyous occasion as Jackie comes home. We will have notable guest speakers and dignitaries, but none more important than the players in League 42, whose innocence and well-being means everything. I can't know how the theft of the statue affected these kids, but I'm sure it was difficult. And I hope they know that the Jackie statue is a symbol of good and that they do their best to emulate the values he stood for. Jackie Robinson has come to mean everything to League 42 as we took on the great responsibility of using him as our namesake. It's a challenge, for sure, because there are not many like Jackie throughout human history. His enormous strength, courage and perseverance are uncommon traits for man, at least to the degree Jackie possessed them. What a great role model.

Tonight will be special because of Jackie and our kids, seven of whom will unveil the statue. Another, Marcus, will speak. And many, we hope, will attend. This is about kids, plain and simple.

Now for some more details about tonight:

We're expecting a big crowd at the north end of McAdams Park, in the Jackie Pavilion near 17th Street and Ohio. Parking will be a challenge. That's why we have worked with First Student here in Wichita, and Kary Dixon, to create a shuttle service from the McAdams Park lot at the south end of the park between Barry Sanders Field and the big baseball field on 13th Street. That shuttle will begin operation at 5 p.m. and will take you to and from the statue ceremony. There will also be parking in our usual lots at the north end and in the lot at the Leslie Rudd Learning Center, as well as the dirt lot across from L'Ouverture Elementary on Wabash. We thank First Student and Kary for making this shuttle possible and we're looking forward to a great event. We will have some ice cream and hot dogs available after the ceremony. Be prepared for heat, but Jackie Robinson's coolness will prevail.

Glove Talk (pt 6)

Good used bats are much easier to find than good used gloves. If you need both, invest in the good new glove and get a good used bat. You can always trade up on that bat later on.

Glove Talk (pt 5)

A top tier gloves retail for $250-300 range. They will easily last 5 years or more if taken care of. Due to leather stiffness, these aren’t recommended until age 13+

Glove Talk (pt 4)

Glove sizing corresponds to positions. Infielder’s gloves are usually 11.5”-12” and have a shallow pocket. Outfielder gloves are 12.25”-13” and have a deep pocket.

Glove Talk (pt 3)

Let’s say your kid plays a game with 10 batters on each team getting 2 AB each, they have a glove on their hand for 20 batters and have a bat in their hands twice.

Glove Talk (pt 2)

Put on your kid’s glove and catch a ball. If it hurts your hand, it hurts their hand. If you struggle to control a ground ball because it’s floppy, so will they.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, don’t spend your entire equipment budget on a bat if your glove is trash.
