When you’re a hot air balloon pilot and your wife is a nurse at Heartland Animal Hospital…this is how you “drop” in to say hello! 😃😃😃👆 🧐 The thing that he dropped? It’s called a competition baggie. It’s a square of fabric stuffed with something heavy (beans or sand) with a long fabric streamer attached to it. Pilots use it to throw at targets during competition flights! #itsabirditsaplane it’s a #hotairballoon

Just what you wanted to see on a Friday morning, right? 🫣 It is Halloween this month soooo… These lovely creatures are called 𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗠𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗦! They primarily live in the ear canal, where they feed on ear wax and skin oils. Their presence causes inflammation, and can also lead to secondary ear infections. Eggs are laid in the ear, and it takes about three weeks for eggs to hatch and develop into adult mites that can reproduce. They are quite contagious and common especially in young animals and cats. Cats can catch ear mites from other, affected cats, or the environment. They can cause severe irritation and itchiness of their ears because...well…you see the video…😒can you imagine those moving around in 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 ear?! Yikes! #heebiejeebies #earmites

Who wants some awesome 💥𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙎𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨💥on their dog’s parasite prevention?! 🪱 🦟 🚫 Don’t wait! October is one of the worst months for fleas so don’t be caught off guard!

💩🪱 We promise we wouldn’t make you suffer the stink of collecting and transporting poop to us unless there was a really good reason… Microscopic parasitic eggs can live in the environment for a long time, patiently waiting for your pet to pick them up for a ride to an intestinal hotel! 👀 There are only 2 worms we commonly see without the help of a microscope in pets’ stool…can you name them?

Congratulations to Maddi on her marriage!!! And congrats to her family, who you know as the Breaults! Maddi doubles as one of our awesome vet nurses when she’s not away at KState working toward her Veterinary degree. Her dad…Dr. Bill…proved he’s got some dance moves in their father/daughter dance 😄

Some fun facts about PUPPIES!!! 🐾 They grow inside their mother’s womb for approximately 2 months 🐾They are born with no teeth and their eyes and ears closed…one of their first senses is touch as they use reflexes and instincts to find their mother’s nipple. 🐾Momma’s lick their babies a lot to stimulate them to pee and poop because they can’t eliminate on their own. 🐾The 1st milk/Colostrum provides lots of antibodies that help strengthen their immune system. When protection starts to wane, it’s typically around 4-6 weeks when they’re weaning. Their immune system becomes more compromised as they eat less of their mother’s milk and transition to solid food. That is why vaccine boosters begin around this age. 🐾Extremely crucial social skills are developed with their mom and littermates around 7-8 weeks old. They’re 1st “fear period” develops at this age as they discover the world outside of the safety of their mother. Puppies learn boundaries with eachother through play and interaction as well as becoming familiar with sights and sounds. Taking a puppy away from their litter sooner than this period can lead to lifelong behavior issues. 💙If your family is thinking about adopting a puppy, please be sure to research any breeds you may be considering. Just because they’re ADORABLE, doesn’t mean their activity level, grooming needs or size will fit your lifestyle. Puppies take work. They take patience and consistency. There are many adult dogs that were once puppies sitting in a shelter or rescue that may have been surrendered because these things weren’t taken into consideration first. NOW…If you read through all of this, POST SOME ADORABLE PUPPY PICS HERE!!! 😁🐾

🦟 🪱 🩸 🔬 😳 CAN YOU SPOT WHAT OUR MICROSCOPE FOUND? That is HEARTWORM MICROFILARIAE in an infected dog! So let’s have a heart to heart about Heartworms. This right here is how Heartworms are picked up by mosquitoes and spread to other dogs. Inside this poor pup are adult female heartworms continuing to release their offspring into his bloodstream. When a mosquito bites him, that mosquito becomes infected with the microfilariae. Microfilariae must pass through a mosquito to become infective larvae. When this mosquito then flies around later and bites another dog, it will spread the infective larvae to the dog through the bite wound. In the newly infected dog, the microfilariae will make its journey deeper into the bloodstream and into the heart. This process takes about 6 to 7 months while the infective larvae matures into adult heartworms, mate, and then release their offspring into the bloodstream, thus completing the lifecycle. Meanwhile, the dog acts completely normal. There may be absolutely no outward signs in the beginning stages of infection. 🛑 So what stops the Microfilariae from completing the process? Heartworm prevention. 💉 Why do we recommend yearly heartworm testing even when you give prevention? Because we are human. In 12 months, we may have been late on a dose, missed a dose, or the dog sneaked it out of its mouth before ingesting entirely. If an infected mosquito bites your dog within one of those vulnerable windows, it won’t be detected for another 6-7 months through testing at your vet. If you visit your vet annually for vaccines, just remember that heartworm testing annually as well will pick up those missed moments from the past and allow for treatment before the adult worms cause so much damage it can lead to major illness or death. ♥️ Hearts are for love…not worms 🪱

🔥 𝙄𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙝𝙤𝙩 𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙜𝙜? It’s definitely hot enough to burn your dog’s paw pads! Sidewalks and asphalt get much hotter than the air around us so opt for grassy areas on walks instead.
