Seemingly simple things like holding hands with my husband and son, laughing until I cry, friends, open windows and sun tea in the spring, sunshine, flip-flops, a good book, a good hug, a good night’s sleep, and the list goes on and on.

In a matter of 13 months, I had three miscarriages. Then, in October 2017, in the emergency room, after I fainted at work, we found out I was pregnant for the fourth time. Carrying that baby boy to full-term and having a problem-free delivery filled me with a sense of strength I’ve never experienced before — bad-ass strength.

🧡 Meet Amanda, who participated in The 40 over 40 Project 📸
Amanda is 45 and has lived in Kansas her entire life. She's been married to her husband for 8 years and has an adorable 6-year-old son 😍 They have 2 dogs, 8 chickens, and a snake 🐍 👀
She has worked in accounting for over 25 years and recently took on HR admin duties.

📣 𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧?
Concern yourself less with what others think of you and more with what you think of yourself. Are you proud of who you’re becoming? Do you enjoy your job? Are you spending time with people who lift you up? If the answer is ever no, don’t be afraid to make a change.

Enjoy your children while they're in school. The job will still be there, and you only get so long with those babies, so enjoy the time with your children. Go to school plays, go to soccer games, and enjoy all that. Because once it's done, it's a little emptier without that.
Spend that time. I wish I had not put in so many late nights sometimes. I figured out it's not about how long you work; it's learning to work smarter, not harder. You could still do the work-life balance kind of thing. It took me a while to understand it.
There's a different importance to that in Europe; I feel that they put more emphasis on the family and not the career.

I have three different things that come to mind. One: I already have it because I'm living it with my grandkids and my kids. Having family dinners every Sunday; to me, that is perfect happiness when they all come over and I have 13 people in the house. Cooking dinner is another, and the last one is more simple: just having a cup of coffee on the back patio watching the sunrise.

🧡 Meet the lovely Keisha, who participated in The 40 over 40 Project 📸
Keisha is 57; she’s an RN registered nurse and leads the oncology programs at Ascension Via Christi.
She’s originally from Dayton, Ohio, but has lived in Kansas since 1994. She’s a mother to four girls and a nana to four grandkids.

📣 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭?
I went to Europe this year for the first time; I went to Portugal.
I loved it; it was amazing. I can't wait to go back. Next time, I don't want to go on a tour; I want to return and enjoy the people. We went to seven different towns; Porto was one, and Nazarene by the sea. We went to Our Lady of Fátima, which was incredible. I love the people, the seafood, and the different cooking techniques. People would sit and talk to me about their different spices, which was just incredible. It was so relaxing; I loved it.
I want to see other countries, too, but boy, I love Portugal. I didn't realize how many Americans live there when they retire because it's so economical. They said real estate is the most expensive thing because Americans keep buying.

My health, I'm so thankful to be healthy. So many people aren't healthy, and there's not always an easy cure or remedy for some illnesses and diseases. I'm just happy to be healthy, able-bodied, and able to work out.

Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries—those are my three words for them.
There has to be a line somewhere for yourself not to overgive. It's important to set boundaries in how people treat you and know where you stand and what you believe in. You need to verbalize that and be clear about where that line is. You need boundaries in friendships, family, work, and romantic relationships. Boundaries keep us safe; they don't keep people away, just like we have fences and locks on our doors.

🧡 Meet the beautiful Brandi, who participated in the 40 over 40 Project.
Brandi is 42 years young. She was born and raised in Wichita and is the Director of Training for Empowered, an educational non-profit.

📣 𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟒𝟎 𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐬??
Yes and no, is that an acceptable answer? Yes, I do because I feel more established. We're all out here winging it as adults; we're just making it up as we go. I like being my age, and then sometimes I like being my age in a way or in the context of I'm glad I can still do what I can at my age. I'm still very active and fun, and I worked with kids for 15 years; they keep me young. I might be 42, but sometimes I feel like I'm 22. I like the comparison and to say I am this age, but I'm still able to do all these things, and I still feel trendy; I'm a trendy 42-year-old.

If people could create environments where people are kind, it would solve 90-plus percent of the issues we have in the world. Just be kind, respectful, and mindful. Mindfulness is key; consider how your actions and words impact others. You must find that line between just-do-you and forgetting everybody else. There are other people we must live with; we must make it OK to be kind and love people despite their differences.

I have many superpowers, but my greatest is my work with populations on which the world turns its back.
I get a lot of inspiration from Mother Teresa because she was never afraid of going to the least fortunate people, especially in the Calcutta area.
She was very open. She would hug and touch lepers and allow people to live with dignity and respect regardless of their background, income, or spirituality.
I like to do that with people; I enjoy working with the people I do. I've met many fantastic personalities and fighters, and many people have inspired me.

🧡 Meet the fabulous Heather, who joined the 40 over 40 Project.
Heather is 41. She grew up and still lives in Richmond, Missouri. She is a social worker who specializes in substance abuse disorders and the unhoused population. She'll go into camps where the unhoused are staying to connect people with the resources that will help them become successful.

📣 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲?
I felt most confident in my mid-30s; I was ultra-marathon running then.
Some people were always very athletic in their younger years, and I didn't believe I could be an athlete. Seeing the look on their faces later when I would go and smash 30+ miles on a Saturday just because it made me feel strong and confident, and I could do anything. In 2019, I ran a 50-mile race, so two full marathons, 53 miles by the time I finished, which was pretty wild.
A lot has happened since then; I feel more confident now in some ways than I did then because I've had a lot of adversity. Having overcome all those things and, in most ways, come out even better on the other side.
It's kind of a toss-up between the two. I can't do those things anymore, but having made it through infertility and several cancer scares. I had half-foot surgery, which took me away from running, which was my absolute passion. At this point, I feel like I'm unstoppable.

I hope they continue to engage. It would be nice if we cared for people better as a community. I'd like to see us not have to deal so much with all these conflicts. I want everybody to have a house to live in, food to eat, and medical care.
I'd like them to grow up and make it better than this.
When I think about it, we have evolved so much as people. Even in my 51 years, all of the things that have changed, I can't imagine the changes in the next 51 years. I would like people to get back to spending less time on their social media. It's fun, but I'm glad I didn't grow up with that.

🧡 Meet the gorgeous Gigi, 51 years young and one of the amazing participants in the 40 over 40 Project.
Gigi was born in Western Kansas and grew up in Wichita; she has moved all over the US and lived in West Africa for the Peace Corps.
She is the executive director of the non-profit Not One More Vet, whichs mission is to transform the mental wellness of veterinary professionals.

📣 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞?
My tattoos, I think of them as jewelry. I haven't been getting many lately, but this arm costs more than some people's wedding rings. And my animals, we do everything for them.
I'm not very extravagant; I love to travel. A couple of friends and I went to Greece several years ago, and we decided to go on a cruise because it's so expensive to go between all the islands. We wanted to see as much as possible together. We upgraded the cabin, and it was a fantastic trip.

My most treasured possessions are the people I know, my animals, and my memories.
My father-in-law died about two years ago, and my mother-in-law lives in Germany. I keep thinking about all the times that we had. I have these memories of fun times with them and sometimes with others who have passed. Unfortunately, a lot of people have passed this year in my world. The people and the memories that come with them are super important to me. My husband, family, animals, and friends, who I have had for so long, and all the memories that come with them, are important to me.

My kids, raising Isabella, she has her special needs or her extra needs, but she still says hi, and she's social, whether they say hi back or acknowledge her. My son is a responsible, yes ma'am, no ma'am, and respectful human being who will be an excellent asset to society. He's just a good human being.

🧡 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫?
I love helping people. Because of my daughter, I've had many different jobs and experiences. I got a speeding ticket when we lived in Washington state, and it was about $500 because I exceeded the speed limit by 25 miles an hour. Instead of paying the $500 ticket, I did community service at a Union Rescue Mission.
Before we moved to Washington, I had worked for a disability attorney. At the Union Rescue Mission, there were a lot of homeless people who had disabilities, veterans who had a mental illness, or just people who didn't know how to obtain services. I was serving food, and if I overheard a conversation and somebody needed help with applying for Social Security, I happened to know it, and I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, I'll help. If I feel comfortable in the situation, I'll help somebody if the opportunity is there. I'm confident in offering my help to anyone who needs it and is willing to take it.

🧡 Meet the beautiful Veronica who participated in the 40 over 40 Project.
Veronica is 49 and a mom to two kids, a daughter and a son. She is a special education teacher to children in 2nd to 4th grade.
Veronica has faced many challenges in life; her daughter was born with a rare chromosome disorder and at the age of 5 she got cancer.

📣 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲?
It was probably after COVID because I had to stay home with my daughter Isabella because she got sick easily. We were already living a quarantined life; I just didn't know it. We were always the first appointment at the doctor's office when we came in. When I stayed home, my son and my husband at the time would have to take their shoes off, wash their hands, and then put on a different change of clothes because of the germs. Seeing that the world was no longer taking things for granted was amazing. I had to live with that when she had cancer and was getting chemo treatment. I knew that I had a 7-to-10-day window if she was going to get sick or not because of her white blood cells. I also had to be careful about who was around her. When the world realized what a freedom it is to walk out the door and drive, shop, or stop and eat wherever you want, not to worry about germs, getting sick, contagious, or just the government telling you you can't get out. I don't know if that was big for me because it wasn't new; I'd already lived it.
