Help us welcome our Summer NCCC Team
Help us give a warm welcome to AmeriCorps NCCC! Eleven members joined us from Colorado on June 24th and they have already provided incredible support to our team! AmeriCorps NCCC are members of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). The members range in age from 18-26 year old and spend months strengthening communities while developing their own leadership skills. While here in Wichita they will build Little Libraries, canvas underserved communities, support our PBS show, and so much more! We have taken them all to see many of the highlights out our community, including our wonderful Advanced Learning Library where they all left with library cards, giving them access to free books, museum admissions, and many free resources! If you see the NCCC team out in the community say hello and thank them for their service. We are immensely grateful for all they have done and have yet to do support our community. Last year, our Early Literacy Pillar made a call to action to educators, community leaders, and advocates to join us at the Imagine. Learn. Grow. Early Literacy Summit. We convened organizations throughout the state to discuss our collective impact on addressing early literacy! The goal of this summit is to learn what impact has been made statewide in early literacy over the past three years, identify gaps, and begin the conversation about how to address areas of need as a community. 🎉 April 30 was Dia de Los Libros / Dia de Los Niños! Storytime Village celebrated with Holy Savior and Evergreen branch Library Community Center. We made a trip to Holy Savior for story readings and to unveil a special painting created by Annika Wooton, which serves as a Tribute to Storytime Village’s 15th anniversary. Then later that evening, we met made our way to Evergreen for their DIA celebration! On Monday, April 29th, Storytime Village convened the community to mark the beginning of an exciting endeavor: the groundbreaking ceremony for a literacy-based community center. This innovative facility will broaden horizons for underserved children and families. This project will restore two historic homes with the goal to create a vibrant village atmosphere, complete with meeting areas, event spaces, a teaching kitchen, and childcare facilities. The design will also seamlessly integrate new structures to provide a welcoming environment for the entire family and for children to foster a lifelong love for reading and writing. Thank you to everyone who came to support the groundbreaking celebration.
