“NO!”
“KNOCK IT OFF!”
"STOOOOP!"
How many times a day do we say these things to our kids? And often in a LOUD, BOOMING voice ☄️
Wanna know why those big reactions don't work to change behavior? 1. Loud voices scare kids, and scared kids "listen" less. 2. Your kid automatically does more of what you give BIG attention to. So when you give an unwanted behavior your attention, in a BIG LOUD way, you're (accidentally) asking for more of that behavior.🤯
Here's an example:
You're enjoying exactly 22 seconds of time alone, washing dishes, when suddenly, little bro rips a toy out of big bro's hands. Big bro instantly SCREAMS LIKE HE'S BEING STUNG BY BEES and hits little bro.❗️
You turn the water off, storm into the room, rip the toy out of his hands, and LOUDLY say, "THAT'S ENOUGH! NO HITTING, WE ARE DONE!"
Real talk? Your HUGE reaction brings chaos to the chaos, which is like throwing gasoline onto the fire.
So, here's what you do instead:
In that moment, you CALMLY, confidently step in - without a loud voice - and hold the boundary: ✨“You're angry and you want to hit. I won’t let you. I’m going to keep brother over here to keep him safe.”✨
And if you're ready to REALLY level up? Rather than give your attention to the “bad” behavior, you want to focus on the “good” stuff you want more of. It's a concept we call "Spotlight the Right."🔦
Here's what it sounds like:
✨"I noticed you shared that toy with your brother. That was really kind of you"
✨""Wow! You're sitting calmly next to your baby sister! I think she likes that!"
✨"Hey! I noticed you were having a hard time putting your pants on, and instead of screaming, you just calmly asked me to help. Your calm words helped me understand what you needed! How do you feel?"
The idea is to ✨Spotlight the Right✨—so you get MORE of the “right’ behavior! And real talk? YOUR perspective of your kiddo just might shift in the process. It feels GOOD to notice the good, instead of harping on the no's.

"Always Do Your Best. Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret." Don Miguel Ruiz
I offer in person and virtual outpatient mental health therapy. I am self pay and see all ages. Please contact me through my website if you want to schedule!
For some of us, boundary holding with our kids is a fresh nightmare. The screaming that follows, the tantrum that ensues, it is just so.much.easier.to.give.in. I mean, I literally avoid conflict SO much that when Starbucks gives me the wrong coffee order I enthusiastically say, "THANK YOU SO MUCH!" no less than 16 times, tell them how much I love it, then give a 50% tip. People pleasers unite (🙋🏻♀️).
BUT, when it comes to our kids, boundaries are key:
✨"I hear you want more iPad, we are all done with iPad today."
✨"You want cookies for lunch. That's not on the menu today."
✨"Hurting someone is not ok. I won't let you."
Did you just cringe and tense up when reading those? Okaaay me too. BUT, here's 2 perspective shifts on boundaries:
1️⃣ Firm, loving boundaries ACTUALLY make our kids feel safer.🤯
Despite what it may seem like, kids feel safest with a calm, confident leader who means what they say. When we go back on our boundaries, when we give in to the extra episode, or 5 more mins at the park to avoid the tantrum, it actually cues the toddler brain to say, "MAYDAYMAYDAY CHAOS." Toddlers CRAVE predictability, so when we say 1 more episode, but sometimes 1 more episode actually means 5 more episodes, that's CONFUSING and chaotic.
When our child is testing the boundaries, imagine them saying, "This is a test. Will you keep me safe? Are you in charge or am I in charge?"
2️⃣ Those BIG upset feelings that come after boundary holding? The screaming, the anger, the sadness, the crying? Those feelings are TOTALLY, completely, absolutely OK.🤯
YEP. Remember, all feelings are OK. In fact, allowing a healthy release of emotion will help them move through the feelings quicker and even builds trust in your relationship - because you're a safe person they can honestly express with, and at the same time, you're a confident adult who makes the big decisions and takes care of them. That combo is dope AF - and builds some lifelong resilience in your kid.

“An important reminder that one in five to one in seven moms (or more) experience a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD) such as postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety. These issues pop up in pregnancy as well.” —
“You don’t need a diagnosis to deserve support in motherhood *and* seeking out the right care and support when it comes to your mood can help you distinguish between normal feelings of adjustment or hard in motherhood and a PMAD.”
