Since the start of Covid-19, an estimated 129 billion disposable masks are used every month around the world (American Chemical Society). A study estimates that in 2020 alone, 1.5 billion of those masks ended up in the ocean which equates to about 6,500 tons of plastic waste. Each mask can release up to 173,000 microfibers which are extremely harmful to marine life and our oceans (Environmental Advances).
