Our 4th of 5 hats honoring iconic NC women is THE MAYA hat, in tribute to Winston-Salem resident and Wake Forest professor Maya Angelou (born Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) who was an American memoirist, poet, civil rights activist, and local/international legend. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.

Meet KATHARINE! Celebrating one of the original NC influencer Katharine Smith Reynolds (November 17, 1880 – May 23, 1924), designed REYNOLDA HOUSE estate (now a Winston-Salem museum), and was engaged in social causes, such as education. She married to***co tycoon R. J. Reynolds. After his death, and a bit scandalously, she married a handsome schoolteacher who was 13 years younger than her. She appreciated fashion and designed/constructed several pieces, including her wedding trousseau.
