We want to thank everyone for coming out to our 'Chilly Strings and Savory Things' Holiday Party.
A huge thanks to all the people who brought such amazing food for the pre-show potluck!
A big ole thanks to our old friend Kelly Linville for filling in on drums for us the entire night. We had THREE drummers out for sickness! Kelly played the entire show and absolutely crushed it.
Thanks to Chris Phelps and the entire team at High Rock Outfitters. They've been with us since the beginning.
The musicians that made the night so incredibly special:
Time Sawyer, Luke Mears, Molly Rose Murphy, Tyler (our new friend on Sax! You'll be seeing more of him in the future)
We hope everyone has a safe and fun NYE and we're looking forward to seeing all of you again in 2024!

Beer and Banjos in Boone with D. Brewer!
It doesn't get much better than that.

BIG DADDY LOVE boys with Brewer World Tour in Boonetown last night for SouthEnd Brewing - Booneâs monthly Beer & Banjos.
This is a joint statement from Big Daddy Love and Possum Jenkins, written by Dave Brewer and Brian.
I was 18 the summer after graduating high school in 1998 when I played my first ever âreal showâ at Ziggyâs, when it was still on Baity Street in Winston.
Our band, Plan B, had recently connected with Abe Reid of the Blue Rags, and he was fresh off his win at the recent Piedmont Amateur Blues Competition. Part of his top prize was a headlining show at the club, and thanks to our budding musical friendship that summer, Abe allowed us to open the show.
ALL of our friends came to Ziggyâsâa couple hundred mostly high school kids from out in Clemmons. It was by no means packed, but it was enough folks to make plenty of noise on a swampy August night under the big top.
The set climaxed with a not-too-shabby version of âIn Memory Of Elizabeth Reedâ by the Allmans (VHS footage of this epic performance still exists, in case youâre interested). The quintet of Casey Hauser, Kevin Timmons, Reese Dorrier, Peyton Gimbert, and I exited stage left back into that dingiest of green rooms and felt, for a few fleeting moments, like WE had just rocked the Fillmore. It was indeed glorious.
About 30 seconds after we finished, our rowdy herd of young West Forsythian friends headed quickly out the door before Abe could even get his stool and guitar out to center stage. What followed was a rousing solo set with his award-winning brand of foot-stompinâ Piedmont blues, and the 20 or so people that stuck around were very appreciative.
At nightâs end, Abe took 100% of the proceeds from the door. And because he performed solo, he didnât require the services of the sound engineer. We did, however, and so Abe required us to pay the engineerâs $100 fee out of our pockets.
In terms of having any music business savvy, we were greener than green, mostly just thrilled to play a show at the legendary Twin City nightspot, agreeing to do the gig essentially for the much-heralded âexposure.â I guess I was hoping Abe would pay it out of the proceeds from the door since weâd drawn such a sizable crowd. The dealâs a deal, though, mate.
Anybody got $20 I can borrow?
====================================
The Ramkatâs decision to give our Feb 2 date to a national touring act is a bit disappointing. Initially, it was suggested that perhaps we could all share a bill. When we declined (based on it being our little olâ 20th Anniversary Show), they moved ahead, giving said act our long-held slot while offering us several alternative dates from which to choose. (The touring artistâs management also declined the option to join the lineup)
As we have 9 musicians who all perform in various bands, none of the offered dates were amenable to the Possums and Big Daddy Love.
Weâve all been in situations very similar to this one and 90% of the time we always find a solution that works for everyone involved. Unfortunately, everyone was under a strict deadline of about 24 hours to figure this out and it just wasnât enough time.
To their credit, our friends at the club have been nothing short of extremely apologetic. Admittedly though, it kind of feels like weâre the longtime girlfriend next door being dumped by our boyfriend right before prom for some new hot girl. Meanwhile, the boyfriend calls and says heâd REALLY love to go dancing sometime, just, you know ⌠not at the prom.
We are well aware that the music club business is hard. After all, weâve been in this thing for nearly two decades, in case you havenât heard. Decisions must be made, and the financial realities cannot be ignored when desirable acts have available dates and workable routing/touring. A lot of times, itâs an easy fix, and the local yokels can slide on over to the next night, but this timeâŚit wasnât. Now everybodyâs pi**ed.
It certainly wasnât anybodyâs intention to get all riled up right here at the holidays, but the fans, friends, and families of Possum Jenkins and Big Daddy Love are an admirably loyal bunch, and have expressed their feelings on the matter with no uncertainty. THANK YOU! Youâve been with us since the beginning and thereâs no doubt youâll continue this journey with us no matter what. We love you and could not have had this amazing journey without you.
Now, if everyone can take a deep breath, or drink or t**e or WHATEVER calms your music-loving soul, and remember that this too shall pass. Brent Buckner used to sometimes call Winston-Salem âWin Some, Lose Some.â Ainât that a fact!
