Music Therapy Propels Young Boy Through Cancer Treatment
A cancer diagnosis is devastating, regardless of your age. When it is a child, it’s even more challenging. For one young man, he turned all the emotions surrounding his courageous journey into a new love of music.

The sound of a bell echoing through the halls of UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center means a child's treatment is complete. This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we share the poem that is read before the bell tolls and express our admiration for these children, who inspire us with their strength and courage as they battle pediatric cancer.

Earlier this month, UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center patient, Steddy Hortance, was highlighted at the Worcester Red Sox game. Steddy and the Hortance family announced "Play Ball" before the game! The Hortance family was excitedly expecting their third child in April 2022 when at a routine ultrasound at UMass Memorial Medical Center, mom, Kayla Hortance, received a rare diagnosis of Vasa Previa. This pregnancy complication could lead to severe blood loss for the baby. While working with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Department, Kayla and the baby’s condition became emergent at 30 weeks. After an emergency C-section, Steddy was born weighing a tiny 3 pounds, 15 ounces. He was brought to the UMass Memorial Medical Center – Children’s Medical Center NICU where he remained for 39 days. What started out as the scariest day of the parents’ lives turned into a journey filled with love, hope and pride. Steddy is now a happy, healthy, thriving one-year old! Watch Steddy’s video montage that was featured on the jumbotron before the game.

Music Therapy is offered to our littlest friends to promote developmental growth while in the hospital. 🥁 🔔 Playing instruments provides opportunities for fine motor growth and engaging with live music promotes early communication development. The repetitive structure of songs provides a sense of familiarity and comfort to young children, setting the stage for successful learning. 📚 🎶 Music therapy is often seen as a comforting experience to patients and families amidst the unfamiliarity of a hospital environment. ⭐️ #ArtsInHealthcareMonth

Dr. Neal Tyrrell made a little wager last week…if more than 30 staff attended a pediatric trauma workshop, he was going to let Dr. Caitlin Wilds (pediatric psychiatry) dye his hair green!!!! 💚💚 Well…he kept his promise and we think it’s a good look!!!! Let us know what you think in the comments! 👍🏻 #mentalhealthawareness #pediatrics #flipthescript #playisgoodmedicine #breakthestigma
