Conversations about race and racism can often feel emotionally charged. So much so that many people avoid these conversations altogether, preventing awareness and connection from taking place. This furthers our racial divide.

Ruth has developed a free training to help you press pause on your emotional overwhelm so that you can stay connected and engaged in the conversation in ways that deepen understanding and strengthen kinship.

Black women I know are resilient, but society pathologizes them as mentally ill anyway 03/03/2022

I had the opportunity to hear Gail Parker speak twice this month about her work in sharing Restorative yoga, journaling and affirmation as self care practices.

Black women I know are resilient, but society pathologizes them as mentally ill anyway I regard Black women as being among the most mentally and emotionally healthy people I know. It’s not that we don’t feel sad and sometimes depressed, become anxious and sometimes terrified, get angry or become outraged. It’s not that we don’t need therapy, sometimes we do to regain emotional...

Winter Blues -- Sylvia Boorstein – Lion's Roar 12/22/2021

A short and fruitful read. I appreciate that Sylvia Boorstein doesn’t try to claim mindfulness is a panacea and will be a “curse” for mental health. Mindfulness “might” be a tool to support you; however, that this doesn’t hold true for everyone.

Winter Blues -- Sylvia Boorstein – Lion's Roar Perhaps these days of less sunlight are opportunities for more contemplative time, more looking deeply to see what can only be seen in the dark.

Overwhelmed? Pay Attention 12/01/2021

A short article by Kim Brown, one of my meditation teachers, on the topic of being a witness to the suffering of others and working with our feelings as well as recognizing our shared common experience of being human.

Overwhelmed? Pay Attention Our natural empathy and compassion arises and we’re able to deeply connect with everyone’s struggles and suffering—including our own.

Dr Daniel Siegel presenting a Hand Model of the Brain 04/01/2021

I’m reminded of how technology is a blessing to bring folks together from far and near (especially now) and how it can be frustrating when it doesn’t work. For example, leading tonight’s class when it wasn’t working, which was a direct experience to lead into tonight’s topic of stress reactions. Someone was sharing how they take a few minutes to let emotions settle and I shared about when the opposite happens and you “flip your lid” as Dan Siegel speaks about...
