Five big reasons to support your local small business.

This coming Saturday is Small Business Saturday. While this is likely a very familiar phrase to you, I’d like you to pause and contemplate the impact when you support your local business owners.
Here are my top five reasons why supporting small business is so important.
1) Small local owned businesses create, maintain and support the flavor of your community. Think about what is so special about the Main Street in your community. It is quaint, unique, clean and peppered by small restaurants, shops and services that exist nowhere else.

2) Small businesses are run by your neighbors, not some board of directors, not stockholders, not by algorithms. As such, they are creating originality and customization in a world quickly becoming homogenized.

3) Relationships between patrons and small business workers go beyond customer service, they become familial. Products and services are tailor made, customized, regional solutions versus the vanilla, one size fits all offering of big box and corporate chains.

4) Small business owners care about the neighborhood they are running a business in. They do things like attend municipal meetings to support or dispute important matters; shine windows and pick up trash; and donate raffle baskets & gift certificates to local PTOs, extracurricular school programs & athletic teams, and non-profit community groups.

5) Jobs are created in the community. The small business owner is more likely to take a chance hiring that high school kid or find a project to help support a temporarily out of work neighbor. An added bonus is that small business owners understand the value and are more likely to support other local businesses. My mechanic, hairdresser, marketing guru, boutique artesians, repairman, retail suppliers, pizza guy, banker and accountant live in or within 10 miles of my zip code.
I could go on and on but I’ll just let you sit with this for a moment: How great is your experience as a consumer when you are dealing with someone that is fully engaged in something they love?
