River cruising

This month’s topic is river cruising. Sailing by river means enjoying all the conveniences of a traditional cruise, along with all the benefits of inland travel. It means stopping in multiple destinations on every trip, you'll visit bustling cities and hidden gem villages, only unpacking once. It’s traveling to different places and taking your hotel with you!

Some of the benefits to river cruising include:
• Small number of guests
River cruises offer an exclusive, luxurious option for travelers. A smaller vessel means a more intimate vacation setting with staff focused on each guest.
• All Inclusive
All-Inclusive— Most food, beverages, and often excursions are included in the overall price, allowing travelers to enjoy a decadent vacation without the stress of planning every detail and pinching every penny.
• Daily Discoveries
River cruises stop at new ports almost daily offering passengers an itinerary full of unique destinations to discover. With access to narrow ports and through shallow waterways, river cruising offers a cruise for travelers who love to experience new cultures, visit historical sites and relax in cruise luxury.

Central Europe
If you want to see the sights of Central Europe, consider a river cruise on the Danube. This sparkling river can take you from the beauty of Vienna all the way to the Wachau Valley in Austria. You can choose from shorter four- day river cruises on the Danube or go all out with ten to fourteen days of seeing stunning sights throughout Central Europe.

I recommend thinking about which ports of call you want to visit, then choose the river cruise length that will allow you to see them all. This will ensure you won’t skip past some of the must-see sights in this part of the world. I can help you decide which ports of call will be best for your vacation if you are struggling. I will tell you now that Vienna and Budapest will be on that list. These two cities are packed with thrilling activities. I personally just returned from a river cruise on the Danube and loved every minute of my adventures!
Switzerland and Amsterdam
A river cruise on the Rhine will be exactly what you will need if you want to see Switzerland’s countryside, as well as the streets of Amsterdam. Imagine watching the hills of the Black Forest pass on by as the ship cruises down the river or wandering through the castles that dot the land along the Rhine Gorge. The cathedral in Cologne will pique your interest. Culture is everywhere in the city of Amsterdam including the Anne Frank House Museum.

Just don’t focus solely on the museums and galleries there. Gondola rides through the canals will allow you to enjoy this city from a different perspective.

Paris and Normandy
One of the most sought-after river cruises in Europe is the one that takes you from Paris to Normandy. Numerous river cruise lines take this route along the Seine and you can choose to go in either direction. I recommend staying in Paris and Normandy for a couple extra days on either end of your river cruise. This will ensure you can truly enjoy the areas outside your cruising time.

While in Paris, you can wander along the streets visiting the museums, go shopping in high-end boutiques, and don’t forget to eat a croissant for breakfast each morning! If one of your ports of call includes the small village of Giverny, head to Monet’s beautiful garden. Don’t skip the D-Day beaches, you will want to experience the heroism that took place on these beaches.
Asia
Yes, you can take a river cruise through Asia! The Yangtze is the longest river in Asia however, most river cruises focus on a smaller section of this river. That section is the Three Gorges, which is near China. In this area, you can experience the bright lights of Shanghai, wander through the Forbidden City in Beijing and check out the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an. If you have the chance, exploring Fengdu Ghost City on Ming Mountain is another must-do activity during a river cruise.

The hottest new destinations for river cruising in Asia include Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. Discover the beauty of Southeast from the colorful markets to the stunning architecture to the friendly locals, you’ll fall in love with the grandeur of this region. On your Cambodia cruise along the Mekong River, you’ll tour ancient temples of Angkor Wat, participate in traditional ceremonies and learn techniques for handmade crafts.

I recommend taking a river cruise in Asia during the months of April and May or September and October. This is when you will find the best weather. It won’t be too hot or freezing cold!

Christmas Market Cruises

Sail into the season of European Christmas markets, aglow with the warmth of a simpler time. From wooden stalls with handmade ornaments and hot-mulled wine to grand Christmas cathedrals and glistening lights, a winter cruise on the Danube, Main, or Rhine Rivers is a true gift of timeless tradition. See musical instruments come to life in Rüdesheim, Germany; taste Austrian Christmas cookies while sailing to Vienna; visit Melk’s Benedictine Abbey to marvel at its frescoed ceilings; and see the magical Christmas markets of Budapest, Prague, or Strasbourg. Family River Cruising

While most river cruises are adults only, there are some cruising designed for families with children and are a wonderful option for multigeneration family trips.

The Extraordinary Northern Lights in Norway
Have you always wanted to see the Northern Lights in a unique way? If you are craving a glimpse of these colorful dancing lights, and don’t want to visit Alaska or Iceland, you have options! One of those options is taking a vacation cruise through Norway to Denmark. During your cruise, you will discover ample opportunities to see the Northern Lights in Norway, plus in between those sightings, you will find yourself seeing the highlights of this spectacular country. Today, I am sharing a sample itinerary for a Northern Lights in Norway cruise. Winter of 2024 through March is prime time to see the Lights at their brightest and most spectacular. I can create a personalized itinerary for your next vacation cruise. Below is a sample itinerary from Hurtigruten Cruises:
Day One: Bergen, Norway

Your cruise will begin in Bergen, Norway. I will have you arriving in Bergen the day before your cruise begins. This will ensure you are ready to board the day of your cruise.
Day Two: Aalesund, Norway

Day two of this wonderful journey through Norway will bring you to Aalesund. One of the best things you can do on this day is visit the Alnes Lighthouse.

This lighthouse is located on God∅ya Island. Learn about the history of the lighthouse before visiting the art gallery filled with works of art by local artisans.

Don’t skip the climb up the steep stairs of the lighthouse to enjoy the gorgeous views. Trust me when I say the photos you get will be worth the anxiety you feel with every higher step.

If you have time, wander around the fishing village of Alnes before returning to the ship.

Day Three: Svolvaer, Norway

You may have the option to stay close to shore on day three of your vacation cruise to see the Northern Lights in Norway. However, I recommend venturing out on a Meet the Vikings tour. I will make sure everything is arranged for this tour. All you will need to do is show up and enjoy the experience!

During your tour, you will visit the Lofotr Viking Museum. There is a reconstruction of the largest longhouse from the Viking Ages at the museum.

The best part of your day though will be participating in a traditional Viking meal complete with mead. Oh, if you do not know what mead is, it is the drink of the gods. It is made from honey, water, and spices before being fermented.

Day Four: Tromso, Norway

You cannot spend time in Norway during the winter months and not go out on a dog sledding adventure! Imagine feeling the cold, crisp air whiz on by, as you ride on the back of a sled.

Of course, no dog sled ride is complete without a visit with the dogs at some point. Make sure you grab some pictures. The dog snuggles are going to be worth remembering!

Oh, and if you have the chance, do this adventure at night. That way you can watch the Northern Lights in Norway dance overhead, as the dogs pull you in the sled. I will be more than happy to check to see which options are available for you, as I am booking your vacation cruise.

Day Five: Kirkenes, Norway

Bundling up is necessary on day five of your vacation cruise. This is because you will be visiting the Kirkenes Snow Hotel. This hotel is made completely from snow and ice.

While you won’t be staying at this hotel, you can still immerse yourself in a guests’ experience. It will be important to dress warmly, so you enjoy the minus four-degree temperatures inside.

Outside, you can visit with the reindeers and huskies.

You will be more than ready to return to the warmth of the ship at the end of today. However, later in the evening, wrap yourself in a blanket and see if you can capture the Northern Lights in Norway from the deck.

Day Six: Kjollefjord, Norway

Hopefully, more Northern Lights will be waiting for you on the evening of day six of your vacation cruise. This will be your final chance to capture the dancing lights, as they light up the sky.

Your journey today will take you on a snowmobile throughout the countryside under the stars. As you speed along, take the time to look at the sky when you can. Don’t worry, you will stop once the Northern Lights begin to light up the sky.

Pro Tip: If you haven’t managed to capture excellent pictures of the Northern Lights yet, try to capture them on video. Most smartphones will then allow you to screenshot photos directly from the video. It’s worth a shot to try to capture the magic you have been experiencing during this adventurous vacation!

Day Seven: Copenhagen, Denmark

Your vacation cruise, and your chances to see the Northern Lights in Norway, ends when you arrive in Copenhagen. I can always arrange for you to spend a couple more days here, so you can wander around and check more items off your travel bucket list.

Check Out These Amazing Family Vacation Destinations

One of the best things you can do with your family is head out of town for a fabulous vacation. The time away from work, school, and full schedules is exactly what you need to relax, recharge, and make a few memories that matter. Today, I am sharing some of the amazing family vacation destinations you can choose from. Each vacation destination will allow you to enjoy each other’s company, as you laugh, talk, and make memories.

Lake Tahoe
If your family loves to be outdoors, head to Lake Tahoe for your next family vacation. This beautiful area out west will have you enjoying activities outside all day long. The best time to visit Lake Tahoe is during the winter months when your entire family can head out on the slopes to ski. There are plenty of ski resorts to choose from and you can easily ski at a few of them during your visit to find your all-time favorite.

If you do visit during the summer months, be prepared to hike along the trails or take a long walk along the shoreline and swim in the lake.

Maui
You can’t go wrong with a family vacation in Maui, or any of the Hawaiian Islands actually.
This Hawaiian Island is perfect for families. You will discover family friendly beaches like Napili Bay Beach and Wailea Beach and if you want to see black sand, head over to Wai’anapanapa State Park. Dormant volcanoes can be seen at Haleakala National Park and hiking is best at ‘Iao Valley State Monument. One thing you won’t want to skip while on a family vacation in Maui is the Old Lahaina Luau; this is the best luau on the island.

Costa Rica
If you are always hesitant to leave the United States when traveling with family, you should know that a few international options are easier to do than you think. Costa Rica is one of those destinations and the entire area is family friendly.

So, what is possible if you do decide to visit Costa Rica? Well, you can spend time at the beach, head into the rainforest to see the wildlife and there are plenty of heart racing activities the whole family will love. The best thing about Costa Rica though is it is a family vacation destination you can visit all year long. The weather is always wonderful.

Beaches in Turks and Caicos
I can’t share some of the amazing family vacation destinations and not mention Beaches Resorts. One of my favorite Beaches Resorts is in Turks and Caicos. This all-inclusive family friendly resort will offer endless opportunities to your family while on vacation. You can stay in one of the five stunning villages, play at the forty-five thousand square foot waterpark, swim at the twelve-mile-long beach or in one of the ten swimming pools. And don’t forget about the twenty-one restaurants for dining!

The best part is you can enjoy some adult time while the kids are having fun at the Kids’ Club. There is even an area dedicated to teens!

Bar Harbor, Maine
Bar Harbor is one of the family vacation destinations in Maine, right here in the US. It is close to Acadia National Park. The whole family will love spending the day swimming, tide pooling, biking, and hiking. At night, you must all head out to see the stars in the nighttime sky. The minimal lighting in Bar Harbor makes the stars shine even brighter. Heading out on a boat tour to see the whales and puffins is a must when you are in Bar Harbor. However, you will need to plan your visit carefully if you want to see the whales and the puffins. I can help you determine the best time to visit for these activities.
