We love this for courageous doodlers and teachers who go with the flow.

Many neurodivergent kids and adults listen and process things better when we doodle, use a fidget or stim in some other way.

Quote text: My policy on letting students doodle or use fidgets in class as long as they remain focused and don't distract others was tested when a quiet student started knitting during a class discussion! I almost stopped her, but it didn't seem to bother anyone else and she was making great contributions to the discussion.

A few weeks later she handed me a funky knitted scarf with a note. The note thanked me for letting her knit during class. Doing something with her hands reduced her anxiety about talking in front of her peers. She was proud of how confident talking during discussions had made her.

Xiomara Sanchez has an M.A. in Counseling and has been working as a therapist for more than 15 years. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the U.S.V.I and the state of Colorado. She has worked in substance abuse clinics, outpatient mental health clinics, the Department of Education, and a psychiatric hospital. Her focus has been on working with depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, as well as survivors of abuse.

When we teach coping skills to kids, it's important to fill their toolboxes with a variety of different skills.

Because, of course, what works in one situation might not be helpful in another.
Here are 5 types of coping skills to teach your student:

1️⃣ Deep Breathing - Examples: 4-7-8 breathing, belly breathing, pretending to smell a candle and then blow it out
2️⃣ Expressive Strategies - Examples: Talking to someone, writing or drawing about how you feel, prayer/meditations
3️⃣ Distraction - Examples: Walking away, finding something else to do, saying the alphabet backwards
4️⃣ Positive Self-Talk - Examples: Reminding yourself that you can make good choices, telling yourself to focus on what you can control
5️⃣ Physical Movement - Examples: Walking, stretching, yoga, pushing on something

VITEMA, Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services and U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Public Works will be conducting Operation Blue Skies Sandbag Distribution for RESIDENTS ONLY on July 25, 26 & 27, 2024 from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM.
Please see details below for respective site locations. All Fire Stations sites are self-serve stations; only sand, shovels and sandbags will be provided. All DPW sites are drive-thru where the sandbags will be placed in your trunk. Please remember that for both sites the maximum number of sandbags are 6 per household.
