Study Buddies’ tips and tricks for stress management 🧠

As final exams are slowly becoming a reality, and assignments are piling up, stress management is a crucial yet difficult thing to do.

-----------------------
Got concerns? Don’t hesitate to book a free session with us if you need someone to talk to. ✌️
-----------------------

#1: Set yourself goals on what you want to achieve in each subject based on what you are getting.

For example, math seems too difficult and you are getting 3-4 (out of 7). Your goal should be a 5. Even though you might desperately need this subject for your dream University, its not worth it to overwork this subject while neglecting the others and your mental health. Not everyone can get all perfect scores, take your ability for granted and just stick with it til the end.

#2: Set your priorities, work should always come second.

Weight your tasks like this: Tasks that takes the least amount of time, Tasks that yield the most to your final score, Task with closest deadlines; should be prioritized. However, you should set time for your fun and relaxing hobbies first and plan your tasks around that. For instance, this task is urgent but I have 2 free hours before class tomorrow, I should stop working by 10pm to watch that new Netflix episode.

#3: You have so much things to do in the coming week, note them all down.

Buy a fancy notebook and a fancy pen. Every time you feel like you have lots to remember and on your mind, write them down in bullet points even if they seem useless. Have a meeting with EE supervisor? Have piano lesson on Friday? Have to buy groceries on your way home tomorrow? Note them all down before bed.

Study Buddies’ tips and tricks for IB Physics🔭

Physics is a scary subject indeed but its relevance is greater than ever before due to the rapid advancement of technology in the recent years. If you wish to enroll in engineering courses in University, Physics is a must.

-----------------------
Got questions about Physics?
*Book A Tutor! Time’s running out!🚨*
-----------------------

#1: When asked to define a key term, make sure you use correct terminology.📙
Try to stick to the definition given by the textbook in your exam. Since questions like these are usually 1 to 2 points, the mark-scheme usually has a concrete answer with very little flexibility. Thus, definitions, or when asked to explain a phenomenon, make sure to use correct textbook terminology.

#2: Questions involving calculations, try to find relationship between different topics.⛓
If a question has multiple sub-questions, and it is abut mechanics. Make sure you know the relationship between lets say kinetic energy and momentum, both of which are influenced by mass and velocity. Make sure you know the relationships by study your content thoroughly or just by looking at your formula booklet.

#3: For Physics IA, find a topic that is relatively simple if you want to be safe.🪐
This doesn’t mean to pick an overused topic, but rather look around and see if you can experiment how one thing influence another. Starting with a simple topic, preferably one that you already know the result of. If you got nothing to write, make it more complicated by adding in another variable.

Study Buddies’ tips and tricks for IB Math🧮

Math sure is a subject that got everyone scratching their heads and felt like giving up. However, it is one of the most versatile subjects for a lot of University programs, especially if you don’t know what you want to do in the future.

-----------------------
Got questions about Math?
*Book A Tutor! Time’s running out!🚨*
-----------------------

#1: Do the questions in your textbook especially exam styled. You’ll instantly know what to review! Time yourself! 📌
By doing practice questions, you’ll see questions that you have no idea how to do, or you realized you forgot to study, now is the time to look back. Never Ever study a Math exam by reading textbook, use the method above to strategically study super efficiently. Same goes for past-paper which yields even better results. Time yourself too!

#2: When you see exam question worth more than one point, but don’t know the answer, write what you know down. 🖌
IB exam mark you based on the information you provide, a correct answer is only worth 1 point, the rest goes to your methodology and seeing what you know. You can earn an easy point by perhaps simply writing out that you’ll use the sine rule for that questions even if you don’t know the answer.

#3: Be consistent with your study plan! 💯
That means having setting a schedule perhaps 2 hours weekly on a Saturday doing practice papers in a cafe with your friends and discuss results afterwards. Or work with a mentor consistently so that he/she will soon understands your weaknesses and can prepare for your exam more effectively. Never stop because you fell like exam’s over and you can relax!

Wanting To Attend A Prestigious U.S College? 🇺🇸Read these tips! 🔥

#1: Scores don’t matter, but they kinda do? 😮
Ahh yes, the myth we always hear about. Scores like GPAs, SAT/ACT, TOEFL/IELTS, IB, AP, etc. DO MATTER! If you’re applying to a top school or a competitive scholarship, scores MATTER GREATLY! They matter because, without them, your application might not pass the gates, let alone being reviewed by a college admission officer. Schools advertise that they’re test-optional because they want as many students to apply as possible so that they can claim that their acceptance rate is low. Therefore, study your heart out and dominate these tests!

#2: Talk to your parents about finance 🤑
Be honest about it! “Are you able to afford the price tag?” It’s the hardest question to ask your parents, but it is extremely necessary and vital for your college application. If you’re an international student applying to the U.S, congrats - you’re the gold mine for the entire U.S college system! This is not to say that there isn’t a good deal for your higher education, but this requires efforts and strategy to achieve; just like a good Black Friday deal. Always be honest about where you can afford to attend, and how you can fund your education smartly.

#3: Research. Research. Research. 🧐
We cannot stress this enough. A lot of our students jump straight into building their college lists without researching. That’s not wise. You’re just basing your future off of some flimsy and potentially misleading rankings website. You have to be able to understand your school. Why do you like it? Why is it beneficial for your future career and passions? Is the community a good fit for you? Do you like the location of the school? Are there any scholarships? Make a pros-and-cons list for every school. That way, you’re ensuring that you’ll be enjoying your time there.

Study Buddies’ tips and tricks for your CAS (Extracurriculars)

CAS seems to be a burden for a lot of people, while it offers students a chance to explore their personal interests as part of their academics. School shouldn’t be just memorizing textbooks for the exam, but rather the fun experience including those unique ones you get from CAS!
-----------------------
Got questions about how to approach CAS?
Submit it here: bit.ly/questionsforStudyBuddies
-----------------------

#1: IB is not your actual examiner of CAS, University admission teams are.👨‍🎓
While IB does require you to complete it for your diploma, their requirements are rather flexible. Universities on the other hand requires you to show your non-academic experiences such as leadership, interpersonal skills, talent in performing, etc. Having a good and diverse CAS portfolio can a lot of times be equally as valuable as having good grades.

#2: Focus on CAS activities that has actual value and challenge to you. 🎭
This means doing few long term or unique activities that you think sharpens your skills or appeals to your dream University/Employer, rather than many short activities. Know an instrument? Host a concert and work with other performers around your school. Don’t know what you like? Run for student representatives or help run a club. Even activities you do outside of school counts! You will soon realize the opportunities are endless!

#3: Start early so you can focus on academics in your final year!⌛️
Time is running out as half of this academic year is coming to an end. Start your CAS early so you can: 1. Have a longer long term activity on record. 2. Have more time for more diverse activities. 3. So you can choose to focus on academics in your senior year. 4. You simply can’t buy back time!

Weymen Koo - UBC ‘25:
“Thanks for the memories. Thanks for the effort. Now that I am a tutor, I feel you.” 😅

Study Buddies’ tips and tricks for applying to Canada🇨🇦

Each Universities in Canada have their own way of applying on their website. While they do have the OUAC (OUAC105 for international applicants) for Universities in Ontario, you will still have to use their websites for other things like personal essays. Which is why we have compiled some tips and tricks below to guide you through the process.
-----------------------
Got questions about applying to Canada?
Submit it here: bit.ly/questionsforStudyBuddies
-----------------------

#1: Your personal statement is worth the same, if not more than your grades.🏆
Most Canadian Universities will require you to write a short (100-500 words) essay about yourself. Do it even if it is optional! It will primarily ask you about your extracurricular activities, your personal qualities, disabilities, and issues that might impact your academics. It gives the admission team an insight into who you are and what you are capable of beyond academics. This might be the determining factor in deciding whether you got admitted or not.

#2: How to write a good personal statement with limited word count.⛔️
Get into the point and make the sentence very short. Write in a seperate doc and fix it until you’re happy. Some Universities have character counts instead of word count which means always use short words, (for example can be written as eg.). Brag a bit, be optimistic, tell them how good you are, don’t be afraid to tell stories about when things didn’t go right, if you have personal issues that might’ve affected your grades, tell them.

#3: Keep track of all the important dates and always email them when in doubt.📬
Go through their websites thoroughly and note down all the deadlines for things like housing, deposit, transcripts, etc. Find out information abut deferral as well in case you need a gap year during the pandemic. Always email the admission team politely if you have any doubts, don’t be afraid because it won’t affect your chance of admission. Always submit things at least a few days early, missing the deadline might mean waiting another year.

#4: Got multiple offers with approaching deadlines but your dream University hasn’t announce their decision yet? 💔
Rank the offers you have from most favorable to least favorable. Then accept the one on top of your list regardless. This might be awkward, but unless you are confident that your dream University will accept you, you will not want to wait a year to apply again. You may find out thoroughly whether you can reject the offer after you have accepted it (but still before paying any deposit).

You Don’t Have Chemistry With Chemistry? 😰
Don’t Sweat! We can help! 💪😤

#1: Past papers do not belong in the past! 😲
Contrary to popular beliefs, you can actually use “past” papers to prepare for future papers. Past papers consist of questions that are based on your curriculum, and they are as close to an actual IB exam as you can get! Don’t be afraid to use them to practice your knowledge, learn how IB examiners phrase their questions, and even time yourself to ensure that you’re familiar with the test’s format! If you’re wondering “Where do I get these past papers?”, read on!

#2: Use seniors and alumni 😇
Ahh… boomers. They tend to be the people who offer the best advice for school. Use them as much as possible (academically, not emotionally though)! They can tell you all the tips and tricks for battling with Chemistry or effectively communicating with your Chemistry teacher. They might also know a thing or two about where to get those legendary past papers too!

#3: When in doubt, Youtube is your best pal 💻🔊
Have a question about a difficult topic? Don’t understand an experiment or phenomena? Youtube has the answers to all of your problems! Channels like “Crash Course” or “Professor Dave Explains” have saved our lives on numerous accounts; and they can save yours too! Free educational content on those channels will allow you to speedrun your 1-AM study for the next day’s Chemistry test, so don’t miss out on them!

How Can You Dominate SAT Math? 💯📝😤

#1: Practice your mathematic skill in timed sessions 🕘
Don’t just practice Mathematics. Practice in timed sessions! A lot of our students are Math wizards, yet they have difficulty attaining good SAT Math scores due to their inability to finish the test in time. Therefore, remember to time your Math exercises and always note down your weaknesses when it comes to achieving the highest scores in the least amount of time!

#2: Find keywords in questions 📑🔍
Don’t jump to the answer right away! Remember that because of time pressure, you might miss a few important details in the questions, which can be damaging to your score. When you read the question, remind yourself to pay attention to the unit that is being asked and what the different numbers in the question represent.

#3: Use logic before the calculator ✅❎
Sometimes, the answer can be easily deduced from the question with a bit of logical thinking. That is why we advise that when you read the question, pay attention to the numbers, equations, and units to fully understand how you should solve this problem before even touching the calculator. After you’ve carefully read the question, don’t forget to have a look at the answers; you might be able to identify the irregularities among them and eliminate the obviously wrong answers.

Study Buddies’ tips and tricks for Extended Essay 🎓

EE sounds like a very daunting task for all, but it offers a great opportunity for everyone to explore their interests beyond what you already knew. The first obstacle is choosing your right subject.
-----------------------
Got questions about choosing EE subjects?
Submit it here: bit.ly/questionsforStudyBuddies
-----------------------

#1: No matter the subject, it will always be Hard.🤯
Just because your friend tells you Biology is easy doesn't mean it will be for you. Choose subjects based on your career path and your interest so you will remain motivated throughout the process. Enjoyed Science even if you think it will be harder than English, choose Science! Vice Versa.

#2: You don't have to be a genius in that subject to choose it. 💡
Nowhere in the criteria does it assess you based on how difficult or complex your topic is, but rather how well you can explain a new topic you’ve learned. After all, you are still in high-school. Often school will advise you to choose the subject that you’re currently taking high level in because you will have more understanding about what topic you can potentially choose.

#3: Use the EE guide, and your teachers. 👩‍🏫🧑‍🏫
The first thing to look at when you are tasked with choosing your EE subject is the EE guide. It has a thorough breakdown of what’s good and bad in each subject and can often guide you on how to choose a good topic later on. Then talk to your subject specific teachers and ask for their advise. When in doubts, always ask.

Study Buddies’ tips and tricks for Geography 🌏

2020 has been filled with constantly evolving global issues, ranging from politics, to the physical changes of our planet due to climate change, Geography is a fun and dynamic subject for students to explore current world issues.
-----------------------
Got confusing topic at hand?
Submit it here: bit.ly/questionsforStudyBuddies
-----------------------

#1: Youtube sometimes offer better case study than textbook. 📺
Textbook sometimes can be lengthy and include unnecessary details or outdated case study, not everyone is a good reader as well. Sometimes, it is better to look at news articles, youtube documentary, research papers for more relevant case study. Simply do this by typing your topic into the search bar, remember to pick a reliable source.

#2: Always define key terms and include statistics. 📊
When writing essays in Geography exams, it is crucial to define all the subject specific key terms (especially those you see in the textbook) to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding. Do this regardless of its redundancy. Secondly, always include statistics for your case study, even if it's a very rough estimation.

#3: When writing case study, answer: what, when, where, how. 📍
To write a good case study for your essay, simply answer these questions: What happened, When it happened, Where it happened (draw a map), How it happened, and perhaps How was it resolved.

Tips to achieve the highest score on the IELTS Reading section 😤
-------------
Have questions about the SAT, IELTS, TOEFL, or IB for us? 😀
Ask away: bit.ly/questionsforStudyBuddies
-------------
#1: Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph 💪
You’ll see a lot of tips and tricks online for reading passages on an IELTS test. Whether those strategies or our strategy works for you ultimately depends on your abilities and preferences. Nonetheless, we usually recommend our students to read the first and last sentence of each paragraph before looking at the questions; this is because those are the sentences that will give you a good idea of the passage’s as well as each paragraph’s main topic. This way, when you’re reading a question, you know right away where within the passage you should go to to find the answer.

#2: Find keywords in questions 💬
Save time by looking for a few keywords in a question and going back to the passage right away to search for those keywords. Combine this method with the reading method above, and you’ll be able to immediately identify the paragraph where those keywords are based on the topic of each paragraph.

#3: Eliminate wrong answers ❌
Never identify the correct answer before the wrong answers. By eliminating the wrong answers first, you are using logical and critical thinking to find the most likely answer of the bunch. This way, you make sure that you’re not missing any better-phrased or more logical answer just because you’ve already made up your mind about another one.
