Have you ever asked a young child a question, and they don't answer for what seems like ages, so you just assume they weren't listening or didn’t understand, and carry on talking yourself? We probably all do it without thinking (children's pauses can be reeeaally long) - but you'll really help their talking to develop if you can make yourself wait a bit longer before jumping in. Learning to talk is an amazingly complicated thing to do. When we ask them a question, toddlers and young children are trying to understand what we said to them, thinking what they want to say, and trying to find the words to say it - and they don't know nearly as many words as we do!

Also (as Rachio2020 commented on our Instagram page, thanks) - if young children don't respond at all or walk away, it can well be because they didn't understand rather than that they're being 'rude' or 'naughty' - looking for non-verbal signs (such as your child looking confused) can give clues about this.

Taking the time to listen and talk with them though - trying to pick up signs that they don't understand, but giving them space and time to answer - makes a huge difference to their talking and understanding.

Hopefully these 3 tips will be a handy reminder. We'd love to hear if it makes a difference for you and your child, or if you have any other suggestions!

We are so excited to share that we'll be able to offer outdoor pop up sessions this summer! The post with dates and times will go live on Facebook at 9:30 on Tuesday June 22nd. A few things to note:

1) We are unable to run as many sessions as we have in the past so we ask that you sign up for 1 and you can put your name on 2 reserve lists.
2) All the sessions will be outside so they will be weather dependent.
3) We will continue to follow government guidelines and if they change, we might have to change what we can offer.

We look forward to seeing you this summer😎

Accidents are one of the biggest killers of children in the UK.

Accidents in early life can also change a child’s life path irreparably. Children are 13 times more likely to die in preventable accidents and three times more likely to be admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

Aberdeen City has the highest number of A&E admissions in Scotland when it comes to A&E seeing children need treatment for injuries from accidents that are often preventable.

Partners across Aberdeen are working together to raise awareness and provide support to empower parents to identify and manage risk.

It's Infant Mental Health Awareness Week, and this year the theme is in children and young people's mental health. A recent survey of mental health workers carried out by the Parent Infant Foundation found that there was a 'baby blindspot' when it comes to the mental health of babies/infants.

It might seem surprising to think about the mental health of babies, who can't yet talk. The infographic below helps to explain what it means - including the importance of a strong and secure relationship between the baby and parents or main carers. Being a parent or carer can be really challenging, but the sooner that difficulties are picked up, the easier it is to offer support that can make a big difference for both baby and parents.

Sometimes after having a new baby mums can feel anxious, worried, depressed, and isolated. These feelings can be scary but aren’t rare. More woman feel like this after having a baby than you might expect. During this past year, we recognise that many people caring for young children may feel these feelings as well. With current restrictions in place, we can’t offer our usual peer support groups, however, we can offer 1-1 support. This may look different for everyone- it could be a weekly phone call, a video chat, a doorstep visit, and/or a walk and chat. If you are interested in this type of support, please send us a private message. Just a reminder that if you have serious concerns about you mental health, please get in touch with your health visitor and/or GP.

* we are now operating a wait list as full*

We are trialling a 4 week outdoor Baby Peep group beginning in June on Monday mornings. If you have a baby from birth to 12 months and are interested in attending, please send a private message with your child’s name, date of birth, a contact number, and your post code. Details of the group will be confirmed with you when we can allocate you a space. This group is for babies only and due to limited numbers we ask that older siblings do not attend.

We thank everyone for their patience as we try to restart our groups after the last year.
