Illiteracy is among the most frequent and damning critiques leveled against Gen Alpha online. It is also empirically true of a demographic whose median age is 6½.
In California, children are expected to be able to read around December of first grade, meaning the majority of alphas should have been literate by New Year's Day.
Yet thousands are still struggling, making reading among the starkest reminders of a pandemic most teens and adults would prefer to move past.
Alphas "are some of the hardest-hit kids when it comes to reading," said Shervaughnna Anderson-Byrd, director of the California Reading and Literature Project. "Only 43% of our students are on grade level in California."
Millennials gave birth to 'Generation Alpha.' Are these kids already doomed? — Los Angeles Times Children born from 2010 to 2024 are part of “Generation Alpha,” the demographic successor to Gen Z. They are already being called “feral,” illiterate” and “doomed,” with bad parenting by millennials and the influence of technology blamed for bad behaviors.

Actor and long-time Irlen Advocate, Paddy Considine, is in the spotlight once again for his role in the new HBO series House of the Dragon (the prequel to Game of Thrones), and he’s doing his part to let people know he has Irlen Syndrome and wears Irlen Spectral Filters. In the New York Times, it says, "As for the glasses, they contain special lenses to treat Irlen syndrome, a disorder that is believed to affect the brain’s ability to process visual information. (Much of the science and medical community is skeptical about the affliction, but Considine and many others say the lenses changed their lives.)" We know you and your clients would agree with Paddy! Hi Everyone,
This week, Irlen Syndrome was featured in the TV show Pen15, a hilarious adult comedy about the awkwardness of middle school. The writers at Pen15 nailed it with their hilarious (and super-accurate) explanation of Irlen Syndrome on this week's episode, when the main character, Maya, gets diagnosed with it by her psychologist and is given yellow glasses to wear! Kudos to the writing team of this 4x Emmy-nominated show for keeping it real and helping to spread the word! Check it out in Season 2 Episode 12 "Grammy" on Hulu.
One giant leap 😃😎

For some people, sunlight, fluorescent lights, bright light, glare, or even headlights at night can put extra stress on the brain, causing a variety of physical symptoms, including: eye strain, headaches, fatigue, sleepiness, nausea, dizziness, anxiety, irritability and discomfort. Filtering the light through precision-tinted colored lenses can eliminate this stress on the brain, allowing you to be in all types of lighting conditions without pain or discomfort. Bright lights don’t have to hurt!
Here at the Irlen Syndrome Foundation, our mission is to provide increased access to affordability of assessments and color intervention for Irlen Syndrome. If you would like more information, please visit www.irlensyndrome.org
