A winter wrinkle busting warmer: Ginger
๐ซReduce Fine lines/wrinkles
As an anti-oxidant, ginger can battle against those free radicals caused by environmental pollutants and protect skin from pigmentation and wrinkles
๐ซNourish Scalp & Hair
Ginger has fungicidal properties that may help protect against dandruff and flakey scalp. With a healthy scalp follows happy healthy thicker hair growth.
๐ซImprove Acne and spots
Antimicrobial properties may reduce spots and gingerol is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help reduce angry skin.
๐ซScars and Cellulite
The anti-oxiants can boost blood flow to transport collagen to the skin to help smooth scars and cellulite.
Ginger skin scrub
1 tablespoon ground ginger
4 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons of oil (olive/coconut/almond)
Ginger Bath Salt
2 teaspoons of fresh ground ginger to my bath with Epsom salts for a warming soak.
Ginger Scalp Shampoo
Splash of ginger juice to my normal shampoo to soothe my flakey winter scalp.
These are recipes I have tried (but you might want to patch test first and wash off immediately if any irritation occurs)
๐Summer Skin Superfood: Cherries are in season, delicious & can boost your skin's health & radiance.
The pigments that give cherries their deep red colour are powerful antioxidants that protect skin from premature ageing.
Cherries are also a forgotten rich source of vitamin C, which is vital for collagen production, skin brightening & sun protection.
Cherries also have anti-inflammatory effects that can help calm skin redness associated with acne, eczema and rosacea. ๐
Hayfever: A GP's top tips!!
Itchy eyes, 'scratchy' throat, tiredness, stuffy head, runny/blocked nose, loss of smell, wheeze, cough....It's approaching that time of year again... ๐คง
This picture is my 3year old son suffering with HAYFEVER after playing in the long grass in Trellech a couple of summers ago.
Hayfever can range from mild symptoms to disabling symptoms for some. Tree pollen allergy has already started and Grass pollen often starts in May.
Anyone can develop hayfever at any point but it is more common in those prone to allergy, eczema and Asthma.
My top tips:
๐ธ Avoid outdoor time when pollen counts are at the highest - especially mornings and evenings
๐ธ Keep Windows Closed
๐ธ Consider a new pollen filter on your car
๐ธ Wash clothing / pets (!!) when returning from outdoors
๐ธShower pollen off hair and body when returning from outdoors and wash bedsheets / pillow cases more frequently
๐ธAvoid drying clothing/bedsheets outdoors
๐ธWrap around sunglasses
Medicine treatment involves:
๐ Eye drops for sore itchy eyes such as Sodium Cromoglicate 2% which is the same as Opticrom 2%.
๐ Nose sprays for sinuses such as beclometasone or fluticasone.. Also known as Beconase or Pirinase. These reduce the inflammation in the sinuses and reduce mucous production but can take 2-4weeks to work fully so should be started early in the season but are very effective when used daily without side effects.
๐ Antihistamine medicines help reduce most symptoms and most usually stick to once daily less sedating options such as cetirizine (same as Piriteze or Benadryl) or loratadine (same as Clarityn).
Some people may need all 3 treatments depending upon severity of symptoms.
Most treatments can be sought from your local shop or pharmacy. In Wales these items can be picked up for free from the Choose Pharmacy scheme. If these measures are not working, might be worth seeking advice from your local phamacist or GP surgery.
Other brands available and some medicines can interact with other medications.
Hope this helps you get the most out of summer and avoid hayfever symptoms,
Dr Emma Baker
