The Beijing Farmers' Market supports locally and sustainably produced food and products and educational exchange between farmers and consumers. Join us!
The first Country Fair took place in September of 2010. Since then, the Beijing Farmers' Market has been providing an opportunity for producers and consumers to interact in direct exchange. Consumers can obtain fresh, local food with a transparent history and farmers can obtain a fair price for their high-quality products. More importantly, personal interactions at the point of sale transform the
market into a mechanism for reinforcing common notions of community and about what constitutes ‘good’ food, in every sense of the word. We believe face-to-face interaction between the people growing food and the people consuming food is something to be celebrated...every weekend. Join us in excellent produce, homemade good, fresh from the kitchen food, informative talks and good old fashion Farmers' Market fun. What do you mean by “organic,” anyway? Many of the farmers at Country Fair have not undergone organic certification. Domestic ‘green’ and organic standards are complex and receive limited trust and recognition among consumers; and obtaining certification is usually expensive and difficult. However, the farmers participating in Country Fair all share goals of producing safe, healthy food through cultivation practices that support human and environmental wellbeing. At least one of the Country Fair organizers has visited each of the farms in attendance. These farmers are our friends, and we trust them. What are Country Fair’s standards? We believe in organic principles, and we work with farmers who do not use chemical fertilizers, pesticide, or genetically modified seeds, and who treat their animals as humanely as possible. We support:
1. Independent small farmers.
2. Openness and transparency of information, and a willingness to share all aspects of production with consumers (including the sources of seeds, fertilizers, silage, etc.)
3. Sustainable production and operation, representing concern for human and environmental health.
4. A commitment to cooperation, among farmers and consumer alike.
5. True product traceability: we aim for all products at Country Fair to pass through at most one additional set of hands between farmer and consumer.
6. Buying local.
7. Fair trade principles and traditional craftsmanship.
