: Cricketer-Turned-Politician Mohammed Azharuddin Lits Fire Crackers In Hyderabad Politics

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Azhar uddin has celebrated Diwali with firecrackers or not, we don't have knowledge about that, but one thing for sure, he had indeed lit up fire in Hyderabad politics by making his presence in old city bastion of Hyderabad by receiving Sadbhavana Award and his rumoured reports on fighting against heavy weight Asaduddin Owaisi for 2019 Lok sabha polls.

The former cricketer along with retired IAS officer M Gopala Krishna were felicitated by the party at Sadbhavana Awards function on the occasion of the 27th Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Yatra Commemoration Day at Charminar, recently.

At the meet, Reddy who was accompanied by Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly K Jana Reddy, Leader of Opposition in Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir and former MP V Hanumantha Rao advised Azharuddin to contest from Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency in 2019 elections.

Being a Hyderabadi, Azhar has better understanding and knowledge of problems faced by the people in the city and therefore, he should contest the next elections from Hyderabad, they said.

The news about announcement of Azharuddin fighting a Hyderabad parliamentary elections taken social media with storm , gossip mongers, social and political circles from last three days had been busy discussing about new developments taking shape in Hyderabad politics.

A former cricketer since 17 years out of the cricketing world, He Hardly seen rarely on small screen in Hindi news channels as a cricket analyst; But ,still His hometown Hyderabad people has a huge liker of him even after seventeen years.

In, 90's era only two Hyderabadi celebs were renowned and famous at that period, One is Azharuddin (Ajju bhai) and another one is Bollywood actress Tabu, many would take pride in taking their names for bringing fame and respect to the city of nawabs.

Azhar was having his unique style of standing collar and adorning religious amulet while playing cricket, This sporting look has attracted many eye balls of his fans.

Azharuddin was a middle-order batsman of India. He was known for a graceful and fluid batting style. John Woodcock, a cricket writer, said of him, "It's no use asking an Englishman to bat like Mohammad Azharuddin. It would be like expecting a greyhound to win the Epsom Derby."

Retired cricketer Venkataraghavan stated that "Azharuddin had the best wrists in the game".

Azhar makes his debut in international cricket in 1984, He started his cricketing Carrier with a flyer by hitting three consecutive centuries in his three maiden test matches. He shot to fame across the globe for his outstanding display of game for hitting three 100's in three test which is unbreakable record until now. Even Late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi congratulated personally in lunch break to Azhar in his third test of Kanpur. Azhar leaded Indian cricket team as a captain for 10 years, under his captaincy India played three world cup tournaments of 92's,96's and 99's.

Azharuddin was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1986 and Padma shri in 1988. and he was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1991.

Azharuddin still after his cricketing carrier come to the end ,has faced alot of ups and down in his personal life, beside politics.
From match fixing scandal to third marriage to Foreigner.

It's begins with match fixing scandal in 2000,Azharuddin was accused and was found guilty of match-fixing in the match-fixing scandal in 2000. Then South African captain Hansie Cronje indicated that Azharuddin was the one to introduce him to the bookies. The ICC and the BCCI banned Azharuddin for life based on a report by the Central Bureau of Investigation. He was also the first player ever to be banned for spot fixing.

However, On 8 November 2012, a Divisional Benchconsisting of Justice Ashutosh Mohunta and Krishna Mohan Reddy of the Andhra Pradesh High Court revoked the ban imposed.

Many of the fans of azhar and closer to him alleged ,He was falsely implicated in match fixing scandal.

Azharuddin married Naureen in 1987 had two sons with her.

In 1996, he divorced her and married actress Sangeeta Bijlani.The marriage ended in a divorce in 2010 reportedly due to Azhar's alleged affair with badminton player Jwala Gutta, which was declined by the player.

His younger son Ayazuddin died in a road accident in 2011.

Azhar and Shannon were spotted together during a vacation in Paris in 2013, when Shannon had claimed that Azhar was just a friend. On Saturday however, Azhar, while visiting his deceased driver Jaan Mohammad's family in order to offer condolences, introduced Shannon as his wife.

The biopic was made on azhar's life on big screen by Bollywood producer Ekta kapoor , To convince azhar for his nod to make a biopic on his life, ekta kapoor reportedly have to meet 30 times with Azhar.

Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin's hopes of becoming Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) president shattered after his nomination papers for the position were disqualified on Saturday.

The rejection came in the wake of Azhar's failure to give any proof over removal of his Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ban and if he was a valid voter or not.

Azhar commenced his political journey from 2009.

Azharuddin formally joined the Indian National Congress party on 19 February 2009. He won the Indian general election, 2009 from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Azhar performance as a MP in his moradabad constituency is not satisfactory, according to the residents of Moradabad.

Moradabad district, home to the famous brassware artisans whose dazzling craftsmanship is much sought after at home and abroad.

The Association for Democratic Reforms gave 4.7 out of 10 for performance in Moradabad as MP.

Interestingly, an internal assessment report by the Congress said just before 2014 polls, that Azhar may lose his deposit if he was fielded from the city again. But post Muzaffarnagar, Azhar is back in the race, along with favourites such as Rashid Alvi, Raj Babbar, Begum Noor Bano and Meem Afzal, say Congress sources.

"Azharbhai toured the city two weeks ago. He made it clear that he is the Congress candidate from Moradabad. He has instructed his team in the city to prepare for the elections. Besides, Azhar is well regarded for his development work.

He has got solar lights installed in every mosque, temple and roundabouts. He has got a floodlight worth Rs 1.24 cr installed in the local stadium. This stadium is the second after Kanpur's Green Park to get the facility in UP. Moreover, Azharbhai is one of those MPs who spent most from their MPLAD funds," said Azam Ansari, a close aide of Azharuddin and Congress minority cell president in the city.

One of the correspondent, toured several areas of Moradabad city to verify Azam's claims and found solar lights indeed fixed in every mosque and temple that he visited.

But people are also angry with Azhar, particularly the brass artisans, who want Azhar to get their loan of Rs 85 cr waived. "We will be happy only if he gets the loan waived. Artisan colonies were inundated in floods in 2010 and 2011 and hence many of them have not been able to return their borrowed money. If Azhar can help them, he will get their support. Most Muslim voters in the city are artisans," said Mohammed Yamin, an artisan from the old city area.

"Azharuddin let down the people of Moradabad who voted overwhelmingly for him. He barely visited the constituency. He came around 10 times in the first two years, and did not care to visit after that," Mohd Javed, a local property dealer, said.

"He never came for party meetings. Lakhs of people voted for him, but he let them down," said Shah Alam, another resident.

In February 2013, locals held a protest against the cricketer-turned-politician and even torched his effigy for his alleged neglect of the constituency.

But, Azhar straight away, shot back by denying it, These are all baseless surveys. 'I spent all my MPLAD funds six months before my tenure had to end. People there are very happy with my performance.'

Will Congress will be pitting Azhar against MIM supremo Asaduddin Owaisi?

Congress party is willing to nominate Azhar from 2014, Last Ex-CM of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, Kiran Kumar Reddy too tried to bring Azhar on board in state politics by pitching him against Asaduddin Owaisi in 2014, but it couldn't happened.

The recent abuzz of Azhar joining the local politics has created a stir in political circles. Many of them welcome him whole heartedly for his eagerness to join state politics.

If Azhar contest against Owaisi, can Azhar swayed away the voters of old city towards him is the question?

Azhar image as a persona in his hometown of Hyderabad has mixed feelings towards him.

An old timer senior citizen says, in 1996, Azhar lost certain amount of respect and sympathy in orthodox religion muslims for his break up marriage with his first wife Naureen, and getting married 2nd time with a moderate bollywood actress of other community, and in 2000 in match fixing scandal, many of them from his community rallied behind him, by calling him political victim .

Some regarded him as a successful cricketer and un-successful politician after losing Rajasthan lok sabha elections in 2014.

Political observers says, Azhar popularity hasn't been tested yet in Telengana state, in two occasions during 2009 and 2014 elections, he fought election as a outsider, but managed win Moradabad in 2009. But Modi wave hit him in Rajasthan in 2014 polls.

For, Azhar it will be advantageous for him keeping in mind of his nativity aspect and celeb status which he still continues to enjoy in general public of his state.

Azhar is desperately trying to make himself in roads in state sports body administration or State politics. He was eager to contest election of Badminton association of india election in 2010, but backed off from throwing his hat in that BAI election due to unknown reason.

In January 2017, he tried into the ring of HCA cricket body election, but couldn't able to make it due to technical reason pertaining to his life ban clearance issue from BCCI.

From above moves of Azharuddin, one can analyse his aim and motive that, he is seeking to play a active role in his state administration in his home turf.

Azhar relationship with Owaisis and leaders of other parties; one should remembered the famous Iftar party face-off in 2000, hosted by Chandrababu Naidu in Goshamahal stadium, Azharuddin entry in the venue of iftar party, took surprised everyone. Naidu washed off his hands by saying, he didn't invite Azhar in iftar party, and called him gatecrasher to confronted BJP leaders who had criticised Naidu for inviting Azhar who is accused of match fixing charges. But, later on it was revealed, it was Asaduddin Owaisi who was invited Azharuddin in Iftar party personally, at that time he was a MLA of Charminar, In that, iftar party Azharuddin interacted and spended quality time with Sultan Salauddin Owaisi who was a MIM supremo and a MP of Hyderabad.

In 2011 too, MIM MLAs including Owaisi brothers on his son Ayaz's death, paid condolences to him , attended funeral prayers and make sures by arranging smooth passage of funeral procession of his son.

From above, we came to understand, former cricketer has decent good rapport with Owaisi clan.

Mohammed Azharuddin relationship with Congress and local Telugu leaders likes of former AP CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, Congress T.Subramani Reddy a industrialist, and many others are well connected with him. Even Gandhi family has a soft corner for Azhar, his match fixing matter was sub-judiced, even after that Gandhi family didn't hesitate to reward him a ticket for Moradabad in UP.

Political experts feels, Azhar standing against Asaduddin will not a easy task for a former captain to clinch victory from MIM bastion of old city, which they wresting parliamentarian seat from 1984. In past, famous BJP stalwart and a present vice president of India Venkaih Naidu faces defeat from MIM.

MIM has inexplicable experience on ground, old city politics is a different ball together, it's runs on vitriolic speeches, emotional sloganeering, money mafia muscle power, hijacking booths by rigging polls. This all things will make the differences, which is unfortunately lacking by Azhar and his party.

Will Mohammed Azharuddin obey high command, if he was asked to contest from Hyderabad seat against Asaduddin Owaisi? Azhar has to fall in line, according to high command wish, if he has to attain brownie points in sight of Gandhi family by portraying himself a loyal party follower.

For his progress, Azhar needed Congress party backing in future to get rid of from match fixing scandal. Although court has cleared him from all the charges, inspite of that, still he couldn't able to sought the NOC from the BCCI, because of that, he couldn't able to fight the HCA election, keeping in mind about his track record, Azhar has to no option finally to sail with Congress party for betterment of his future prospect.

Congress want to cash on Azhar's mass appeal in youths of minority community in Hyderabad to cut to size of MIM leadership in Hyderabad, Congress didn't have a strong Muslim face to take on Owaisi brothers , so party is hoping to bank on Azharuddin a familiar face to pitch against Owaisis.

Congress minority leader feels; party should provide Azharuddin with a plum post to wean away minority youths from MIM and TRS, Azharuddin haven't done any contribution to the Hyderabad in terms of sports like of establishing a sport academy, any social causes which youth have derive benefit from him.

To break MIM backbone, Congress leadership should announced him as a deputy CM candidature by making nominated to one of the assembly seats in old city.

Social activists of old city says, to fight back MIM, Congress party should utilised Azhar services as a tool to revive Congress in full swing in old city area just before the elections.

If Azharuddin emerges winner by beating Asaduddin Owaisi then definitely Congress high command will reward him the cabinet berth.

MIM will be playing there old cards this time too, by alleging and infusing a fearful apprehensive campaign that in fight between MIM and Congress, BJP will romp winner Hyderabad, and it will be lead to disaster like Gujarat model.

If Congress want to attain victory from Hyderabad, they have to take Hindu vote bank into confidence by propagating that for MIM only alternative is a Congress Muslim face, Hyderabad parliamentary seat has nearly 60 percent Muslim vote bank, Congress by uniting rest of Hindus and certain percentage of Muslim vote can done the trick in their favour, if BJP didn't nominate a strong nominee from Hyderabad, then Congress can pulled of Hindu vote by consolidating it and can upsets MIM trump card.

Whatever, clear picture will come to know only at the time of elections in 2019, whether Azhar will be fighting Hyderabad seat or not. There is no clarity on announcement of Azhar candidature, Urdu media and social media is abuzz with Azhar contesting next poll, but print, electronic media refrained from publishing this news.

Nor Mohammed Azharuddin cleared the air of this matter, he is maintaining silence on this. But the pot kept boiling in social circles of minority community about this news.

People of state should adopt wait and watch policy until last minute, before coming to the conclusion.
