1. **First Gear (1):** Used for starting the vehicle from a complete stop. It provides maximum torque but limited speed. Useful in slow-moving traffic or when climbing steep inclines.

2. **Second Gear (2):** Engaged for higher speeds than first gear but still offers significant torque. It is often used when accelerating from a slow speed.

3. **Third Gear (3):** Typically used for moderate speeds, providing a balance between speed and torque. Used in regular driving conditions on city roads.

4. **Fourth Gear (4):** Engaged for higher speeds on open roads or highways. It offers a good balance of speed and fuel efficiency.

5. **Fifth Gear (5):** Used for cruising at higher speeds while maintaining fuel efficiency. It's commonly employed during highway driving.

6. **Reverse (R):** Used for moving the vehicle backward. It's essential for reversing out of parking spaces or maneuvering in tight spaces.

7. **Neutral (N):** The gearbox is disengaged from the engine, allowing the vehicle to idle without transmitting power to the wheels. Used when stationary with the engine running.

Note: The exact number of gears in a manual transmission may vary, and some vehicles may have additional gears like a sixth gear or even a seventh gear for improved fuel efficiency at high speeds.
