Mirror, Mirror on the wall… how much further will these markets fall

There are times in life we wish we could just snap our fingers to have the circumstance disappear or get that magical moment to wake up from our deep subconscious slumber that we pray is just a nightmare and not reality. The last few months have firmly placed the stock markets into those categories for some. The seemingly endless downward spiral has created fear and trepidation in the hearts and minds of a very broad demographic. It doesn’t help to think that we have all just been walking through the COVID thing as well as the seemingly new daily events involving the Ukraine, Oil prices, Inflation, rising interest rates, unprecedented crack downs on seemingly every part of our day to day lives and the Johnny Depp / Amber Heard trial. The world is in turmoil and the divisiveness and unrest amongst not only world leaders but also families, business partners and all other social type structures is prevalent everywhere we look.

What tends to stand out the most to many is how are the stock markets doing and will I even have any money left when this is over. Yes, it will end, and we will comeback from it. Even on our lifetimes there have been times when the markets were hit even harder than they have been now:

A few of the Stock Market Crashes in History

· The first U.S. stock market crash was the Financial Crisis of 1791–92

Stock market panic of 1907- First global financial sector crisis drop
1929 stock market crash. ...Market dropped 25% in two days and dropped even further over the days and weeks ahead
Black Monday crash of 1987. ...Dow Jones dropped 22.6% in one day
1992 India’s Stock Market Scam
1997 Asian Market Crisis
Dot-com bubble of 1999-2000. ...Overvalued tech stocks
Financial crisis of 2008. ...Stock Market and housing crash
2010 US stock market flash crash on May 6, 2010, where it dropped by close to 10% in one day only to recover to a net 3% loss by the end of the day
2015-2016 China stock market crash
No where near the biggest, but the latest one on our mind which has created a basis for a sizeable piece of our current issue… Coronavirus precursory crash of 2022. Interestingly this was very good for the markets in the beginning since people were becoming more aware of their funds and thus were driving the prices up on many key market players
Each of these major events were more substantial than our current one yet created a platform upon which to grow our wealth and get top stocks and other investment positions on sale.

Does anyone believe we are living in a fairy tale setting where all we must do is recite some magic words for this to all stop and life return to “normal” again? Each major event listed changed what normal looked like. The commonality is that our markets and society adapted and came back just as they will again.

No, I’m not an eternal optimist, but after 37 years in the industry I am a realist and even though it may hurt for a bit now with a solid and well-designed plan we will come out on the other end a bit shaken and hopefully stirred to take advantage of this great opportunity.
