From a full, potent low-end to an intricate falsetto performance and controlled cracks, the artist’s vocals truly act as an extension of his musical ability'

'Words tumble, they threaten to overwhelm, but this is all part of what this song means emotionally. The words tell a story, the vocal performance adds a layer, a depth. The lyrics of these songs are more than words;

A Dog Named Vengeance (Live in Session), taken from my debut EP 'My Superstition'

In my head, A Dog Named Vengeance is a response to Frank Sinatra’s My Way. I remember when I was about 12 I heard My Way for the first time, and I felt empowered by the head strong don’t-take-no-sh*t message in Sinatra’s cool croon. I played it around my mum one afternoon, and she pointed something out to me. Sinatra’s uncompromising stance and success was all very well and good, but there was no mention in the song of the hoards of other would-be Sinatras out there who attempted to play it ‘their way’, and were not so successful. My Way had no mention of those who failed the audition, who were booed off stage, who somehow managed to miss the mark every time. So I wrote A Dog Named Vengeance about the would-be Sinatra, who had his millions and his fame planned out ahead of him, until things didn’t go quite as he had imagined.

"Uniting industrial percussion sections with electronic feedback, the contrasting smoothness of the guitar’s groovy adlibs prove that a chalk-and-cheese approach can work wonders if done right."

Song no.3, Hey Camilla
Hey Camilla is centred around an unreliable narrator, which is something that runs through all the songs from the EP. It is a man’s account of his life, as he attempts to reassure his therapist that there is nothing to worry about. The process of denial changing into acceptance has always interested me. In the song, the narrator begins to slowly offer his therapist parts of the puzzle that make up his story, and he gradually exposes more and more.

Around the time of recording A Windowless Box I was listening solely to about 5 artists: Kate Bush, Harry Nillson, Eminem, Mac Miller and Cassisdead. I was obsessed with the strong and textured vocals on Hounds of Love, and in ballads like Without You, and I tried to find a way to incorporate these elements alongside the harshness and immediacy of the hip hop/grime instrumentals.
Huge thanks to Steve at Neighbourhood Recording Studios for helping me bring a trashy demo to life, Grant at Fader Mastering for making it listenable, and for the beautiful artwork.
Have fun listening, can’t wait to hear what you guys think x
A Windowless Box Rague · Song · 2022
When I first decided I wanted to release music under Rague, They Weep was the first song that I properly wrote. I say ‘properly’ wrote because the skeleton of the song came about when I was about 18 but in the form of an awful disco track, I think in an attempt to write the next ‘Get Lucky’. Predictably it didn’t amount to much, so I put it on the shelf.
Years later I began listening to artists that used a wide range of sounds and noises in their music, and I thought They Weep was a perfect chance to experiment with some of these more metallic and harsh sounds that had been influencing me.
A spangly guitar part was then substituted for the piano.
The part was recorded on an old dusty piano that would just about stay in tune in Neighbourhood Studios - you can hear the creaks of the foot pedal that had to be fixed with some toilet roll.
Here I perform a stripped back version of They Weep, again recorded at Neighbourhood studios. Enjoy.

“We have a song that has words that are pure emotion, performed in a heart wrenching way, with music that adds to the emotional power of the song and is beautiful ... This is one of the best debut singles I’ve heard in ages”.
