The Nelson Trust
Passionate about recovery. Women's community support | Single/mixed residential rehabs | Trauma-informed care
We're a charity in Gloucestershire, providing abstinence-based residential addiction treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. With the right help at the right time, you CAN recover from addiction. We recognise that some people develop addiction as a result of trauma or abuse in their early life. We work sensitively to help our clients rebuild their lives, equipping them with skills for the workpl
We are highly commendable! ๐
Staff from our Gloucester Women's Centre recently attended the Circle2Success Ltd awards, where we were finalists in the Community Award category!
We are delighted to have made it to the finals in our category, and to be alongside other amazing organisations across Gloucestershire.
Congratulations to all the winners! ๐
"My music therapy helped me so much through my treatment. It helps me with my mood and takes me away from trauma."
This poignant and beautiful piece was created by some of our clients during their music therapy sessions.
๐ถ We strive to foster our clients' creative skills in every aspect of our services, be it through art, music, cooking, or writing.
We love that we can share their talent with you!๐
What did you think?
"We focus on what happened to you, rather than what is wrong with you."
The support we offer our clients is always trauma-informed, gender-responsive, strength-based, and collaborative. Our clients are our priority, and we continuously strive to provide the best support and care they need.
We make change possible. ๐

We love our minivan at the Somerset Women's Centre, so here's another shoutout to those who helped make it possible!๐
A massive thank you to NFU Mutual for your generous contribution of a whopping ยฃ6,590!
We have some great things planned for our clients this summer, and we are ever so pleased that we can extend our support services across Somerset.
To celebrate Pride last month, our Bristol Women's Centre hosted a day of celebrations for our staff and clients! ๐ณ๏ธโ๐
The centre spent the day learning about the history of Pride, enjoying some delicious food at lunch club, and crafting their own badges and flags that represent their identities.
It was such a lovely day. Watch this space for a Pride action group coming soon! ๐
This is how your volunteering makes a difference! ๐
At the start of 2024, our Common Ground Community Garden was just mud and bricks. But with 520 hours of our volunteers' time, we now have a pocket oasis that is officially open for the community to enjoy!
However, the work doesn't stop there! Our garden needs all the help it can get as it continues to flourish. ๐ป

Go purple for Purple Hollie Day! ๐
The staff and clients from our Gloucester Women's Centre celebrated Purple Hollie Day last week and had a wonderful time wearing their best purple in support of the Hollie Gazzard Trust.
The Hollie Gazzard Trust raises awareness of domestic abuse and women's safety in honour of Hollie Gazzard, who was murdered by her ex-partner in 2014. Purple Hollie Day is dedicated to raising awareness of those impacted by domestic violence, a cause we proudly support!
The Bristol Women's Centre is now vibrant and full of colour! ๐
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined our mural painting sessions and helped transform our Bristol Centre into a joyful and colourful space!๐๏ธ

We did it! Somerset now have a van! ๐๐
You might have noticed that we had been promoting our JustGiving page to fund a minivan for our Somerset Women's Centre. We are thrilled to announce that we now have one!
Somerset is a rural area with limited transport links, making it difficult for some women to reach our centre for appointments and group sessions.
Thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts and generous donations from the public, our supporters, and King's College Prep School in Taunton, we can now ensure that women across our county receive the help and support they need.
Thank you so much! ๐

The effects of alcohol can be extremely harmful to our physical health, with up to 980,000 hospital admissions a year.
Despite this, alcohol adverts are shown up to 600,000 times a year, alcohol is more affordable than it was in the eighties, and the UK has the highest rate of binge drinking in Europe.
Itโs hard to escape alcohol when it is so prominent in our everyday lives.
This narrative needs to change.
There's still plenty of time to nominate us!๐
Please nominate us!๐

The first week in July is Alcohol Awareness Week, and this year we are joining Alcohol Change UK in raising awareness of the harms of alcohol.
Itโs estimated that over 600,000 people in the UK are alcohol dependent, with only 18% receiving treatment.
The normalisation of drinking culture in the UK is serving as a barrier to spotting the signs of when someone may be struggling.
If you are concerned about yourself, or othersโ drinking habits, there are many free support service that are here to help.

A special visit to our Gloucester Women's Centre ๐
Yesterday, we were pleased to welcome Rt Hon Theresa May and Richard Graham to our Women's Centre in Gloucester. It was fantastic to hear about the Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, an international initiative to eradicate trafficking and slavery.
Katie Lewis, Gloucester Womenโs Centre Partnerships and Development Manager, said, โWe are supporting women and girls every day who are affected by these issues. We welcome any systemic change that will increase the availability of supportโ.
Christina Line, Chief Operating Officer, added, โโModern slavery and human trafficking isnโt something that happens elsewhere โ it happens here in our local communities, in Gloucestershire and we support the commitment to tackle these awful issues which affect the women and girls we work withโ.
We are grateful for your visit and continued support in addressing these critical issues.

It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss all aspects of women's issues and how we can implement early interventions, enhance community safety, and the justice system.
Thank you for meeting with us! We look forward to continuing our close partnership with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner.
Women's Treatment Working Group๐ท
We are part of the Women's Treatment Working Group, an initiative established by the organisation Collective Voice to collaborate with others in the sector that support drug and alcohol recovery.
There is still a significant gap in research and understanding of the distinctive needs in how women receive treatment and support.
As part of the Women's Treatment Working Group, we are dedicated to making that change ๐
