Origin of yak Down

Every year, the yak herders obtain around 1,000 tons of yak down worldwide via the elaborate combing and shearing process. Half of this comes from Qinghai Province in China – more precisely, in the northeast of the Tibetan highlands.

The fine down used to produce high-quality clothing and home accessories is mainly produced in China, Nepal or Mongolia.

The down of the yaks is obtained both by shearing – similar to that of sheep – or by combing. Traditionally, yak herders comb their animals regularly a few weeks before shearing in order to obtain a fine undercoat in advance. At the beginning of summer, the animals lose their undercoat naturally.

The process of extracting the yak down is very time and energy-consuming. In addition to the multi-stage shearing method, keeping the large cattle in a species-appropriate manner also requires some work.

What is so special about Yak Down?
Yak Down is one of the most precious types of Down in the world. No wonder, because the Down of the Asian cattle has numerous unique features and grants an optimal wearing comfort. It is as soft and delicate as cashmere, keeps warmer than sheep’s Down, regulates moisture, is breathable and even allergy-friendly.
The reason for all these properties is the extreme thickness and multi-layered nature of the Down fibers. The yak fur consists of two layers – the topcoat and the undercoat. The former is mainly used to make coarser woolen goods such as ropes, cords and blankets.
Our clothing, on the other hand, is produced from the fine undercoat. Because, unlike the topcoat, you can also spin these delicate fibers.

Why knitting is so good for you
Knitting helps you to relieve stress.
As the New Zealand magazine “Listener” reports, 73% of people who knit at least three times a week feel significantly less stressed. As an aside, they were also able to sort their thoughts better.

Knitting works like a booster for your brain.
If you’ve ever done it, you know that knitting requires a lot of concentration and attention. It trains the brain immensely. In addition, knitting requires you to work according to certain patterns.

This skill is also trained in this way – and that helps you in everyday life again and again.

This is a pair of gloves that is rarely seen in the making process. First, we spun the thread by hand, then went to the local mountains to pick flowers and dye it, and finally weaved it by hand. With the rapid development of society, this hand-spun thread is gradually disappearing.

In Tibetan area, Traffic police’s job is not only directing traffic for cars but also chasing and directing Yaks. 😆😂

A cute little yak, Tibetans call its color: blue. For those outside of us called: gray. I think because the altitude is higher, the clouds will appear gray and dark blue together.
