The new Murder City Players single is must-hear music – one reggae (“It Tears Me Up”) and one rocksteady (“Don’t Stay Away”), the former a hit by Percy Sledge, the latter a smash by Phyllis Dillon. MCP convey these songs of the Sixties with sweetness and soul, with more than just excellent musicianship. This is music which must lilt and swing, and the Murder City Players, a beloved St. Louis music institution since 1983, deliver emphatically.
In his charismatic, full-bodied smooth style, Tony Rome sings “It Tears Me Up” like he’s that man in the song, aching for love, gazing at the dark end of the street, one step away from cryin’, as the band’s phat riddim and pulsing horn lines urge us to dance. On “Don’t Stay Away,” Shea Alise sings with luminosity and verve, and the song adds not only period-perfect DJ interjections from Tony Rome but a terrific and tasteful horn solo, very much in keeping with the aesthetics of the rocksteady era.
