Happy Friday! As conversations surrounding politics flood the internet, I’m here with some compact information on the two party system that exists within the United States. If you find this system confusing, you’re not alone! I’m here as a resource to teach you more about the history of the US government, provide trainings on the implications of the state of the government today, and create strategic plans on how to push back against oppressive systems. Many people are under the impression that "gender" and "s*x" are interchangeable terms, when this is far from the case. Society at large teaches individuals that gender, s*x, and s*xuality exist on binaries of male/female, man/woman, gay/straight, etc. The reality is that NONE of these ideas exist as a binary and instead look much more like a spectrum.

When a person holds a certain level of privilege, they may feel like they don't need to worry about social equity or "get involved". At the same time, many people with oppressed identities often have no choice but to be involved.

Check out some of my latest work!

Last week, our Legacy of Learning Grant supported an Equity Professional Development Training for CFCSD staff. Presenter and Cedar Falls Schools alumna Chinelo Onuigbo, MSW, received a B.A. in Social Justice and Communication Studies from the University of Iowa and a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. She works to promote social justice and anti-racist frameworks at the community level. "We set a critical foundation for doing equity work in the school setting, discussed the importance of social justice in schools and collaboratively worked through scenarios and actionable plans to move toward a more socially-just community," commented Ms. Onuigbo.

Happy Friday! Today I'm here with the first of a few social equity building blocks I will be featuring. These "building blocks" are bits of information that are crucial in setting a foundation to do social equity work. This first building block pictured emphasizes the difference between equality and equity. Equality can be defined as conditions in which everyone is provided with equal access to resources, services, etc. Equity, in contrast, exists in conditions where people recognize that society functions in such a way that people have disproportionate access to resources, and as such everyone is provided with what they need specifically (rather than just the same amount). While this is an introductory summary, an understanding of social EQUITY is crucial in social justice work. Although marginalized populations experience the majority of inequity, it is crucial for everybody to learn about equity in a push to make the world a better place. It is important for us all to be dedicated to the liberation of groups who have been historically oppressed.
